We live in Arizona! We bought 3 of these Coolaroo shade cloths in gray to match our house color. They are very nice. They shipped individually in tightly rolled and sealed packages. I opened and unrolled each of them; then I rerolled them much much looser and let them lay out, full length, over the guest room bed for about 4 days. We had to wait until curtain hardware came anyway. We installed curtain hardware on back porch. Then I cut one side of shade cloth to match our porch openings and hemmed both short (6 ft)sides. It was very easy to hem them on a standard sewing machine with standard thread even with material tripled - I folded material and then tucked end underneath of itself so it would look nice and there would be no possibility of fraying. Then my husband bought a grommet kit to install grommets. We actually hung the cloth with the longest length (15 f5) going side to side, as we needed the width on the porch and didn't care if the shade cloth did not reach the ground - as we mostly wanted the sun out of our eyes and protect the furniture - plus the dogs could go under it then. The only problem we had was that the grommet tool we bought did not want to go through even one layer of the cloth, so we just ended up making holes with a screwdriver and then using the grommet tool. It worked perfectly. The shades are up, they hung out nice - no wrinkles, and sliding them on an overhead curtain track is so much better than having shades to roll up and down plus there are no mechanisms to go bad or rope pulls to rot in the sun and break. To keep the bottom from flapping in the wind, we installed a grommet in each bottom corner, put eyelet screws into the porch columns, and then got those clamps with a toggle clip, and we just clip them if there is some wind. When they are to the side we just bungee them to another eyelet we put into the column.

My wife and I never review products on line but this purchase warrants one. We just moved into a new house where there are two skylights in the bathroom. In the morning the sun would blare through them making the bathroom very hot. We'd been running a fan to try to keep it cool but the heat continued. We purchased this product, climbed on the roof and attached the screen in no time. The results? OMG. The light comes through but now with zero heat. We were so taken by the results that we decided to put a small piece on one of our kitchen windows where the setting sun created a similar heat to the bathroom. Poof. No more heat while doing the dishes while the filtered light came through. It's no lie when they say this is 7 times better than traditional film.

I have the use of a sunroom back again thanks to this product. It has made a huge difference, but still allows the air to flow and I have the ability to watch the birds and butterflies. Here's how I put it to use: I bought cheap cafe clips (the little rings with clasps). Then I put up a length of vinyl clothesline and secured it with long screws at various spaces. The clips were on the line and I pulled up the cloth in sections and clamped it in place. I added two clips to the bottom and attached those in place to keep it from flying up with the breeze and slapping me in the face. The ambiance in the room is like a soft green cloud - cooler and comfortable enough to sit out there as the sun sets - something that was impossible before. I dream of having a tarp of this stuff on poles over the whole house, but that's just a dream for now. Can you imagine what it would do to lowering AC electric bills? Sigh. (Edit: This year I bought the wheat shade and made interior panels for windows that get intense sun. They are behind drapes and are lovely looking much like the bamboo style fabric. For the panels, I just made simple flat panels and hung them on rods. Sewing on them is no problem whatsoever.

The North Carolina summers can be brutal. My condo deck faces south which provides great light but serious heat. I couldn't use it during the summer for fear of evaporating. I did a lot of research on sun shade sails and cloth and decided on the Coolaroo option. I have a pergola on my deck and wanted to be able to customize the shade cloth to fit. I cut the cloth with carpet scissors because it's too heavy for regular shears. I stapled the cloth to the pergola roof and finished the edges. It's perfect. I'm amazed at how different the temperature is under the cloth and I can still grow 'full sun' plants. In fact, the plants are thriving now that they aren't being baked by all day sun. I plan to leave the shade cloth up all year round. It handles rain with no damage. I use my leaf blower to blow debris up and off the cloth. Great purchase and much cheaper than the alternatives.

UPDATE 1/11/14: I have had this sun shade fabric installed as sun shades for my windows for over 2 years now. I have single pane windows that I cannot afford to replace with more efficient windows.

Analysis of this project demonstrated a 40% decrease in energy usage *on average* in the past two years. In the summer months, I have had a decrease of 20 kw per day usage. Most summer months I averaged 47 kw per day before the installation. After the installation, the monthly energy usage has been a high of 27 kw per day (most months are lower in actual usage).

The fabric is in excellent condition that only needs a light dusting occasionally. You can see out of the fabric in the day time. At night, if I have the living room lights on, you can see outlines and movement in the house.

(ORIGINAL REVIEW)
I debated a very long time on whether to purchase this fabric. I have no idea why I waited so long...but this was a huge mistake to wait.

I built solar shades for my windows. Let me explain. I built frames in 1 x 2 inch cedar wood and stapled the fabric to the back. This gave the frame added stability and some depth. I originally intended to mount these shades externally on my single pane windows. The fabric and cedar frame were so pretty; I used them as a feature on an internal mount against the window.

The amount of light coming through the fabric was surprising given the amount of heat that it kept out.

I have received my first electric bill since mounting the shades. The shades were up for 21 of the 30 days on the bill and I still saved $40 compared to same time last year. Also, this billing period was 3 degrees hotter on average than last year. So, a 20% electric reduction for that cycle.
