5.0 out of 5 stars Coolaroo shade cloth
We live in Arizona! We bought 3 of these Coolaroo shade cloths in gray to match our house color. They are very nice. They shipped individually in tightly rolled and sealed packages. I opened and unrolled each of them; then I rerolled them much much looser and let them lay out, full length, over the guest room bed for about 4 days. We had to wait until curtain hardware...

1.0 out of 5 stars Shade fabric disentegrates and flakes into your hair and food
I loved this fabric initially. However after one summer, this particular fabric (tan colored) starts to flake and these flakes land in your hair and your food and drink. They are all over the place. I haven't noticed this with any other color, just tan. I am going to bite the bullet and try the green or blue color and hope it doesn't flake. So gross. I live in the...

This review is from: Coolaroo Shade Fabric Heavy 84% to 90% UV Block 6 Feet by 15 Feet, Grey (Lawn & Patio)
We had to wait until curtain hardware came anyway. We installed curtain hardware on back porch. Then I cut one side of shade cloth to match our porch openings and hemmed both short (6 ft)sides. It was very easy to hem them on a standard sewing machine with standard thread even with material tripled - I folded material and then tucked end underneath of itself so it would look nice and there would be no possibility of fraying. Then my husband bought a grommet kit to install grommets. We actually hung the cloth with the longest length (15 f5) going side to side, as we needed the width on the porch and didn't care if the shade cloth did not reach the ground - as we mostly wanted the sun out of our eyes and protect the furniture - plus the dogs could go under it then. The only problem we had was that the grommet tool we bought did not want to go through even one layer of the cloth, so we just ended up making holes with a screwdriver and then using the grommet tool. It worked perfectly. The shades are up, they hung out nice - no wrinkles, and sliding them on an overhead curtain track is so much better than having shades to roll up and down plus there are no mechanisms to go bad or rope pulls to rot in the sun and break. To keep the bottom from flapping in the wind, we installed a grommet in each bottom corner, put eyelet screws into the porch columns, and then got those clamps with a toggle clip, and we just clip them if there is some wind. When they are to the side we just bungee them to another eyelet we put into the column.

4.0 out of 5 stars Coolaroo shade cloth, September 7, 2008

Does a fine job of partially screening direct sun without creating shade or reducing light too much. Clips available online for less than $10 plus shipping mounted on rope are the best way to mount the cloth on our overhead deck-mounted pergola.

5.0 out of 5 stars OMG, July 19, 2010
My wife and I never review products on line but this purchase warrants one. We just moved into a new house where there are two skylights in the bathroom. In the morning the sun would blare through them making the bathroom very hot. We'd been running a fan to try to keep it cool but the heat continued. We purchased this product, climbed on the roof and attached the screen in no time. The results? OMG. The light comes through but now with zero heat. We were so taken by the results that we decided to put a small piece on one of our kitchen windows where the setting sun created a similar heat to the bathroom. Poof. No more heat while doing the dishes while the filtered light came through. It's no lie when they say this is 7 times better than traditional film.

Excellent product. Easy to fabricate into any shape desired. Does not shink when warmed by sun. Many similar products do!

I live in the hottest desert in Arizona so that may also have a factor.

5.0 out of 5 stars Now I can be on my deck in the heat of the day!, June 23, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
The North Carolina summers can be brutal. My condo deck faces south which provides great light but serious heat. I couldn't use it during the summer for fear of evaporating. I did a lot of research on sun shade sails and cloth and decided on the Coolaroo option. I have a pergola on my deck and wanted to be able to customize the shade cloth to fit. I cut the cloth with carpet scissors because it's too heavy for regular shears. I stapled the cloth to the pergola roof and finished the edges. It's perfect. I'm amazed at how different the temperature is under the cloth and I can still grow 'full sun' plants. In fact, the plants are thriving now that they aren't being baked by all day sun. I plan to leave the shade cloth up all year round. It handles rain with no damage. I use my leaf blower to blow debris up and off the cloth. Great purchase and much cheaper than the alternatives.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Product With Fast Delivery, September 17, 2010

It has been a hot Texas summer and the west sun was really heating up two windows. This really helped to block the sun from the west facing windows. I know of products simular to this but they only came in black. There is only one problem in that you cant see clearly through the screen, but nothing I have seen is any better (some are worse).

Happy with purchase.

5.0 out of 5 stars Tough synthetic fabric, August 6, 2011

I ordered the wheat fabric and so far have been very pleased with it. We built a pergola this spring and stapled it to the rafters with the butterfly clips. I also hemmed two pieces for curtains to block the western sun. I posted a photo. It was easy to work with but a little scratchy on the skin.(It feels like some sort of plastic or acrylic.) The wheat color does not block a lot of light. It does somehow still manage to reflect a good amount of heat. At night you'll still be able to see some stars and the moon. During the day the sun does come though enough to generate heat but it blocks a lot of it. You can hose it off with a garden hose if gets dirty. I bought my first order through Amazon and was please with their service. However I realized before we were finished I needed more so I searched around and found the same thing at HD online for half the price so I placed my next order there. The curtains are just hung by ring clips and despite the winds, the fabric shows no sign of giving away. I initially had hoped it would provide total shade, now I really appreciate that I can pull the curtains closed and still see the silhouette of the trees and shrubs. It's been 110 degrees here this summer so it really wouldn't matter what was covering the pergola, I'm not going out there! But on days that are relatively pleasant and evenings Coolaroo does it's job.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent product!, June 10, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
As advertised, this shade material works well over our back-of-the house sliding patio doors to block the hot afternoon Florida sun. We cut 6x6' and 6x8' pieces from a single roll and easily sewed a top and bottom seam. Punched three grommets into the top seam to suspend the fabric from our roof overhang and threaded thin plastic (baseboard) molding strips into the bottom seam to weigh the fabric down (prevents wind from blowing it around). Can roll this fabric up and secure it with a single centered bungee cord. This $50 project has significantly cut down on our air conditioning needs since the patio doors allowed a lot of sun in. Fixed awnings to provide similar shade were much more expensive. Quality of fabric is very good.

This shade fabric does the trick. It lets the breezes through yet cuts most of the sun out. It's incredibly durable, flexible, will not rot or mildew, and looks great.
