It was time to build myself a new PC and switch back to PC gaming from consoles, especially with the launching of next gen consoles. The machine will also be used for graphic design, rendering and encoding. Purchased the AMD FX-8350 with the intent of not overclocking it for now and stick with its stock heat sink and fan. For the first few weeks, the stock cooling ramped up on the RPM for fan speed when I played most games (ie. Bioshock: Infinite, Crysis 3, etc.), and this included when encoding video. It was unbelievably loud to where I began to fear something was not right. Built an identical system for the girlfriend but with a different case which included more case fans. Hers was not as loud (though at times I could hear the fan speed up but not as often). I purchased a few 120mm case fans and installed them. It was not much help. Since the initial build I was looking at this Cooler Master Hyper 212 Plus based on the reviews. After the first few weeks of dealing with the noise I purchased the EVO version per the PLUS being discontinued or out of stock.

This was my first time switching cooling systems per always using stock for every build I put together. The instructions were easy to read and it was separated depending on what type of processor you had. Still not 100% confident I YouTubed a video tutorial based on the type of processor I had and followed it step by step. It did take me about 1 - 2 hours to switch it completely over (again, due to not wanting to make any mistakes).

This cooler only comes with one fan but includes the additional clips to attach another 120mm fan. Also, this heat sink is huge! I've seen pictures online and knew it was bigger than stock but didn't realize it was a lot bigger.

Installed this item on a Core i5 2500k and have been using it for some time now. After monitoring it's temps after several hours of Prime95 and other programs, I am very satisfied with this item. i purchased this for 36 dollars, at that price point it is one of the best heatsinks I have heard of. Consistently gets great reviews from professional sites, which is the main reason I bought it. Temps for my system was around 25-30celsius idle and 45-54c avg on full load with Arctic Silver 5 TIM. Temps were taken from program core temp v1.0.
Cooler is very light, has excellent mounting system for socket 1155, isn't too tall, and is pretty darn quiet.
Must note, the main difference between this Evo version and the Hyper plus version is that the heat pipes are grouped together touching each other instead of spread apart and has more uniform base.
Highly recommended

[edit] I currently run a 24/7 overclock core i5 2500k of 4.6ghz on 1.375v. I have done 4.7 and 4.8ghz for short periods but I wish to not use much higher voltage which is why I use 4.6ghz. This cooler does just fine with these overclocks as long as you're willing to use higher voltages. Hope you have good case airflow.

Got bored with my Corsair H70, so decided to go back to air cooling. Temps are actually lower with this. The stock fan is silent during idle. For an almost $60 price difference between this and Corsair's newer H80, stick with this. There's only a few degrees difference in temps from all the pro reviews. I was on the all-in-one water cooling gimmick bandwagon for most of this past year. Glad I got off it. Back to air. Back to reality.

This is the best CPU heatsink on the market. Cooler Master has created a new CPU cooling technology called Continuous Direct Contact (CDC) where their "heat pipes [that] are tightly packed into a flat array on the CPU Cooler base." Essentially, all 4 heat pipes have not only been packed together but they are now also in direct contact with the CPU. Nearly all previous generation heat pipe-based heatsinks have their heat pipes about 2 mm apart from each other and there is a 3 mm metal layer separating the heat pipes from the CPU. The new Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO design is far more efficient and allows the heatsink to be much lighter than older designs. The EVO only weighs 465g compared to the stock Intel heatsink which weighs 380g. The EVO only weighs 85g more!

Because the Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO heatsink surface was too rough and poorly finished, I decided to lap it. I used 220, 320, 400, 600, 800, 1000, 1200 & 1500 wet/dry (dry) sandpaper. Because I was sanding directly on the heat pipes, I decided not to use sandpaper below 220. I did not want to damage the heat pipes. As I did this before on another heatsink, my results were outstanding. ***Do NOT attempt this if you don't know what you are doing as this will probably void your warranty and you may injure yourself.***

My Intel i7 870 now runs 20°F cooler at idle! Before, with my Intel stock heatsink, my CPU ran 16°F above ambient. Now, with my new Cooler Master Hyper 212 EVO heatsink, my CPU runs 4°F BELOW ambient!!! How is that even possible???!!! INCREDIBLE!!! UNBELIEVABLE!!!

I did NOT use the included Cooler Master# DF1202512SEUN 120mm fan. I carefully chose a higher quality Scythe SY1225SL12LM-P fan. It does not seem to be offered for sale on Amazon. I bought it from FrozenCPU.
