The Cooling: Has the Next Ice Age Already Begun?

Funny how time can change one's mind. It seems that experience and common sense often brings about realizations of past mistakes. And so is with this book. As Mr Ponte writes today:

"But the Leftist press continues to quote bug and flower scientists about global warming - including doomsayers who three decades ago were predicting a fast-approaching, planet-freezing ice age. (I should know, being author of the 1976 Prentice-Hall bestselling climate book The Cooling.)

As you probably recognized, all such Leftist doomsaying - hothouse or ice age, wet or dry, population explosion or drastic decline - calls for the same remedy. We must have bigger government, more political regulation and control, higher taxes, and permit less individual and private sector liberty if we are to survive whatever is this year's fashionable danger."

It is always refreshing to see this - hopefully more of the doom and gloom crowd will awaken to reality and see beyond their wishful utopian view of the world.

I read this book some time ago and found it interesting and readable. Ponte explains that the earth may be in fact in an intergalacial period and that the earth may soon be actually cooling. Ponte examines the scientific data and presents it in a convincing manner.

This book is a well researched exposition of the fact accepted by most governments and scientists in the 1970s: the earth is cooling rapidly and we are entering the next periodic ice age. It's a lot more scientific than Al Gore's work. Principally, it will make you realize that our so-called scientists, supported by government research grants, will predict whatever will make them the most money. (Then it was cooling; now it's warming). Draw your own conclusions.

I read this book when it first came out and found it very interesting. But it seemed to fall off the radar screen. Now, 30 years later, I believe it was truly before it's time. Unlike other reviewers, I find that there is nothing contradictory between many of the observations and predictions that the author made 30 years and much of the concerns of the global environmental community regarding global climate change. Serious scientists who have been concerned about climate change for several decades have never claimed to know the full reprecussions of this climate change. And more and more are using the phrase, "global climate change" rather than "global warming" for exactly this reason. And there is, indeed, increasing concern that we could very well be heading into another ice age as a direct result of increased carbon emissions.

Mr. Ponte was indeed prescient!
