a VERY happy owners review., January 21, 2010
This review is from: The Gary Cooper Collection (The Westerner / Man of the West / Along Came Jones / Pride of The Yankees) (DVD)
The supposition of the other reviewer is correct. This is a re-packaging of previously available releases. Along Came Jones isn't a classic but its good fun and a rail thin Coop actually shows some acting range from comic to action star. The Westerner is a stone cold classic western of the highest pedigree featuring William Wyler in the Directors chair legendary cameraman Gregg Toland and co-star Walter Brennan. Speaking of classics....The Pride of the Yankees is just that as well and this IS the collectors edition with choice bonus features! Man of the West features a weathered Coop in beautiful widescreen with a delicious Julie London. Its hardly a classic but it looks great and I enjoyed it a lot.
You have 4 Gary Cooper films on 4 discs...none of this cramming onto 1 or 2 flipper discs like Universal would or compressing them ....but the best quality versions and did I mention "The Westerner" is absolutely cracking good looking, nice blacks and crisp focus!!
To have all 4 of these in a case the size of a single disc and for a single disc price...is a no brainer 5 star release. My concern was that they would be shoved onto a single or 2 disc package and my relief was that they weren't ...if you are curious about these movies or Gary Cooper...hero to John Wayne, Jimmy Stewart, Clint Eastwood and more ....give this a try!

A repackaging of four previously released Cooper films, August 29, 2009
This review is from: The Gary Cooper Collection (The Westerner / Man of the West / Along Came Jones / Pride of The Yankees) (DVD)
This set contains the following films:
The Westerner (1940), directed by William Wyler and costarring Walter Brennan as Judge Roy Bean.
The Pride of the Yankees (1942), directed by Sam Wood and costarring Teresa Wright. Cooper stars as New York Yankee Lou Gehrig.
Along Came Jones (1945), directed by Stuart Heisler and costarring Loretta Young and William Demarest. A case of mistaken identity produces a very good comic western tale.
Man of the West (1958), directed by Anthony Mann and costarring Julie London. Anthony Mann, director of some of the greatest westerns ever made, directs this story of a man running from his past and specifically his extremely twisted outlaw family.
These are all four very good films already on DVD, so I imagine that is the reason for the low price and also the reason that these four films are on four discs instead of two. This is most likely just a repackaging of stock just in time for the holidays, and not a bad idea at that.
