Product Description

Product Description

Secure outdoor spaces in style with this QL-500-WL floodlight by Cooper Lighting. Constructed of heavy-duty die-cast metal for industrial-grade performance, the powerful floodlight includes one 500-watt quartz bulb that casts a broad swath of pure-white light--the equivalent to three 150-watt PAR flood lamps--across alleys, driveways, front porches, warehouse entrances, and more. The fixture's instant on/off feature requires no warm-up period, and it can be used with a dimmer switch (sold separately) to create a customized level of security. Furthermore, its thermal, tempered-glass hinged door provides superior bulb protection and can be quickly unscrewed for easy bulb replacement. Additional highlights include a handsome bronze finish that blends nicely with brickwork, stucco, cement, siding, and other residential or commercial settings; an optional cover plate (sold separately); and a space-saving shape and unique mounting design that works equally well on wall- or eave-mount applications. The unit should not, however, be used in the face-up position. UL-listed for wet locations, the floodlight carries a five-year limited warranty.

Fueled by their mission to be the leading provider of innovative, high-quality lighting fixtures, Cooper Lighting makes and manufactures everything from LED and fluorescent bulbs to exit and emergency, vandal-resistant, landscape, and complex environment lighting options to a worldwide marketplace. The company understands the power illumination holds to set moods, create ambience, enhance the workplace, and transform spaces--whether commercial, residential, or industrial. Parenting 20 exceptional brands, Cooper Lighting enjoys international industry leadership with a history of excellence that began in 1956.

This is the second one I have bought for our subdivison. The first one was used everyday for 3 years before it was vandalized.Other ones I bought before, the casing was to small & the bulbs would burn out often. This product the bulbs last 3 times longer, because the casing is larger & the heat doesn't build up so much. The bulb is easy to change with the one screw removed the door swings open. This is a great product.

I waited to write a review until it was quite apparent that the Cooper Lighting company had no intention of responding to my inquiries. After two e-mails and one telephone call, my questions are still unanswered.

I contacted the Cooper Lightning company first because, I thought, that a mistake had been made by whomever had assembled the floodlight at the factory, but if not, why is the wiring on this Cooper floodlight so sub standard?

Brand new, right out of the box, it was easy to see that the type of wiring that had been installed in this floodlight for connection to a power source was too small of a gauge and had the wrong type of wire covering. This Chinese manufactured "Industrial Grade" Halogen floodlight that I received is NOT "Industrial Grade." Actually, it is not even safe for consumer home use.

The copper wiring inside of the floodlight does not even compare in quality and gauge to the wiring inside of a standard children's 60 watt table lamp. This floodlight was assembled using 22 gauge copper wire for the neutral, power and ground wires with no heat shield, and is less than half as large as the wiring in a standard home table lamp. The copper wiring will melt when pushing 500 watts through a halogen bulb for any length of time, and the thin plastic outer cover on the wiring will melt before the copper does, creating a fire if against wood.

If the type of wiring and material used in construction of this floodlight was a conscious cost cutting corporate measure instead of a manufacturing error, then I warn all who are thinking of purchasing it to not do so, unless you will rewire it with the correct wiring.

The light is smaller than my previous 500W Quartz.
Quick and easy to install. Seems durable.
Only 4 stars because it is not as bright as my previous light. My backyard not lit up like before.
The bulb is rated at 500W. I checked.

Others complained about small gauge wires for too many amps. I checked wires after running light for 10 minutes. They were not even warm. I believe that the wires are sufficient to run this light.

Update: 07-16-2013
Light installed since beginning of May. 2 1/2 months later the bulb blew.
4 stars down to 3.

Used three of these to light up a horse riding arena. Works great. They were cheaper on here than I could get thru the electrical company. I'd buy them again.

Pretty simple and straight forward. I would have like it better if it came with a plug because of the way I am using it. I wired it up with a plug myself. It's plenty bright and easily adjustable.

I have 8 of these lights on a small sports field at my school. That is along with some other par38 bulbs that I am replacing over time. These draw 420w on an amp probe not 500 as listed, but that is still quite a bit. As long as you have the juice these are worth it. They are easy to put up and built pretty solid. Better than others at big box stores for twice the price. Don't handle halogen bulbs with your fingers. The oil will ruin them, and buy bulbs in bulk. I havn't had any of the bulbs that came with these fail but I know they will and I ordered a bulk box of them with a nice storage case here on amazon for really cheap. I only turn my lights on for games so I have about 50 hours on mine which is 10 games worth. Of them all one seems to slowly creep down and end up facing the ground. It may be I haven't tightened the nut enough but I don't want to break it or strip it. One of these would light up a half acre to see people or animals moving around. my 8 of them almost make our elementary sports field look like a pro stadium. Eventually I am going to go to metal halide or LED but if you are on a budget and have plenty of amps to use then go with these.
