Cooper Wiring Devices OS310U-W-K Occupancy Sensor Wall Switch

Features Motion Sensing Technology

The Cooper Wiring Devices Occupancy Sensor Wall Switch provides a simple and affordable solution to saving energy. This sensor switch features a fully dimmable nightlight and 'bedroom' mode that keeps lights from turning on at night while the night light is on.

This sensor has simple control features and configurable settings that work with most lighting loads. The Green LED indicates load status, provides locator light in the dark and blinks when motion is detected. This unit replaces a standard light or fan switch while providing a 180-degree field of view and 1,000-feet of motion coverage.

  • Works with all popular lighting load types
  • Provides 3-way operation when used with a 3-way switch or sensor
  • Selectable time delay of 5 seconds (test), 5 minutes, 15 minutes and 30 minutes for lights to remain on after room is vacated
  • Ambient light override prevents lights from switching on when there is acceptable light

What is an occupancy sensor?

Occupancy sensors automatically turn the lights on when the sensor detects the presence of a person and turns the lights off after a certain amount of time when the person has left the room. This makes occupancy sensors great for areas such as laundry rooms or garages where hands are often full and you’re unable to reach the switch to turn the lights on.

I'm not sure why there is such polarization (forgive the pun) of opinion on this product. I have found it to work as advertised in several installations. The wire colors used fit the standard convention, so there is no confusion about how to wire it. The only odd wire is the blue one, which is only used for a 3-way installation, and their diagrams are quite clear. As is typical with these devices, the delay time is adjusted with a small screw and adjustment is pretty coarse in terms of exact time. However, I was quite able to adjust it for delay times even under 5 minutes.

I can see how there could be a problem with this device if you were replacing a single switch that did not have a neutral in the box. The night light would not work for sure. I don't know how it would affect the function of the motion sensing switch. I have used other Cooper motion switches that do not require a neutral, so I assume this one would work all right.

This motion sensor is a bit pricey at better than $30. But if it works, it's worth it. Seeing the severe issues people have had with it, I'm wondering if this is a quality control problem for the company.

I bought two for the same room.

One works great -- one doesn't.

It goes to turn itself off, and immediately flips right back on. I thought -- huh odd, so I decided to change it to manual on, auto off. Well, the unit would turn itself off, and then right back on -- forever.

I bought this to save energy -- so having it never turn off is quite disappointing. Perhaps customer support (currently closed) will help.

The wiring however was simple and straight forward. Just make sure you have a neutral and a ground in the box.

Edit: After using these switches for a little less than a year -- we're going to get rid of them for a number of reasons:

1) The switches tend to detect the light turning off as movement -- which causes them to turn back on, right after turning off. This is a huge annoyance.

2) The motion detectors can't see through interior glass. We have one in a bathroom, that is pointed right at the shower. It turns off when you're in the shower. You have to open the door and wave to get the light back on.

3) The switches are poorly designed. Guests always ask us how to turn on or off lights. The button area looks the same as the motion area and people don't know they should push the bottom area. Instead they push the button for the nightlight, because it's in the middle and clearly looks like a button. So guests push the nightlight and the nightlight turns off, but the main light stays on. Along with the nightlight there is a green light. Very confusing...

I wanted a motion-detecting light switch that also had a nightlight. I use them in the bathrooms; the nightlight provides enough light in the middle of the night that I don't have to turn on the main lights and then have night blindness as a stumble back to bed. (OK, TMI, but that's my main application)

I purchased several of these and also similar units from Leviton (OSSNL-IDW). So far all have worked, but the reliability and feature set of the Cooper units makes them preferable to the Leviton versions. I'll compare both below:

Both have motion-sensing and can be used as just manual on / auto-off and as auto on and off. I use them both ways; manual on in the master bath and auto-on in the guest bath and garage. The timeout duration is controlled by a rotary setting on both, but while it seems to not have any "stops" both units only allow 3 durations for the timeout. I have had older switches where these potentiometers get flaky after a while so this may be better. Neither will dim the lights (making them suitable for some flourescent lights and LEDs that can't be dimmed).

Both do an adequate job of sensing motion and turning the lights on and then off after a delay. My Levition unit has been intermittent, sometimes not turning the lights on and sometimes not turning them off, but right now it seems to be working normally. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Both have a nice nighlight that you can enable, it shines through the manual button on the Cooper and through the IR window on the Leviton. The Cooper nightlight is brighter, and it also can be set to a preset dim level over a wide range of brightness. This is fantastic. The Leviton dim level is fixed and less pleasing to look at as it has the IR fresnel lens distorting it.

I found the unit to work exactly as advertised, no problems there. Just installed my second unit. The first went into a small mud room between the garage and kitchen with the laundry room off it as well. We were always going through there with something in our hands, often just passing through or in and out in a few seconds. I set the dwell to five seconds. Room is small enough so that one is always in front of the sensor and there is always enough motion to keep it on, but turns it right off as soon as you leave. The second on went in my basement workshop. Again, I often entered with something in my hands. Now the lights come on as I enter. Here I set the dwell to five minutes as I am sometimes a little away from the sensor and somewhat motionless at the workbench.

First, make sure you buy the right unit for what you want. Cooper makes two identical looking and very similarly packaged switches. The OS3… is auto on/auto off, while the VS3… is manual on/auto off.

Second, these units take up a lot of space in your outlet box. Unlike the simple on/off switch it usually replaces, this boy has some volume to it. And you have to squeeze in a couple more wire nuts. And you have to connect to the existing neutral (white) which in one of my cases, already had four wires tied together. Depending on what else is in your box, it may get very crowded. Make sure all your nuts are really tight and won’t come off when you bend and squeeze them in.

Third, if they are clever enough to make a 5 second, 5 minute, 15 minute, and 30 minute dwell, why not go for 60 seconds as well. I would have liked that. And while there is no “indent” between the four timings, you cannot “ooch” it over between settings to get 45 or 60 or 120 seconds. I tried and failed.
