Innovative TV, WAY ahead of its time, February 10, 2005
This review is from: Cop Rock (DVD)
Steven Bocho (NYPD Blues, Hill Street Bues) created a show that TV just wasn't ready for television. It astonishes me how some crappy "stuff" can get immortality status by being pressed onto DVD yet this unusual and "Spectacular, Spectacular" musical cop TV show still sits in the ABC network vault.
Imagine if you would "Hill Street Blues" meets "Fame" through in a piece of "The Shield" and add a dash of "Moulan Rouge" as well as the Tony winning "The Life" and that pretty much sums it up.
"It ain't over till the fat lady sings" and I'm patiently waiting for her to belt out this brilliant show's premiere on DVD.

A show MADE to be released on DVD if ever there was one, July 17, 2005
This review is from: Cop Rock (DVD)
Cop Rock was so ahead of its time, I betcha if it came out anew today it would be one of the hippest and most celebrated things on TV. And of course it's far more likely that an adventurous cable network would mount something along these lines today. To think that a major network took a risk on a show this unlike anything else ever done for television (think Dennis Potter's The Singing Detective but with original songs) is remarkable. So bring it back on DVD already! I think today's more adventurous TV audiences would be amazed to discover a show of this quality that was completely missed at the time.
The matter-of-fact way that the show was able to mix musical numbers with some really gritty cop-show drama gave Cop Rock a tone more sophisticated than most network shows, a kind of we-dare-you-to-laugh seriousness that nonetheless did laugh at itself openly in lighter moments. And its treatment of police/politician/citizen dynamics was savvier than most cop shows too (thanks to producer Steven Boccho's Hill Street Blues experience).
This show would be a cult favorite if only people could get to see it again. We're waiting....

the real cop show, February 24, 2006
This review is from: Cop Rock (DVD)
This was the real cop show; it may have been quirky but it got to the heart and soul of law enforcement. The pathos, ethical and emotional dilemmas were authentic. I tried years ago to get a copy for my ethics class in CRJ...the music is phenomenal...not since the "Choir Boys" has there been anything this good. You'll recognize some actors who have gone on to star in many movies and tv shows...it is an American folk opera and deserves to be rescued from obsecurity.
