5.0 out of 5 stars Innovative TV, WAY ahead of its time
Steven Bocho (NYPD Blues, Hill Street Bues) created a show that TV just wasn't ready for television. It astonishes me how some crappy "stuff" can get immortality status by being pressed onto DVD yet this unusual and "Spectacular, Spectacular" musical cop TV show still sits in the ABC network vault.

Imagine if you would "Hill Street Blues" meets "Fame"...

3.0 out of 5 stars Saw two songs on youtube and would be interested to see more.
I saw two songs on youtube "Guilty" and "Be Careful Out There". I would like to see more now. With song competitions being the rage and Glee on the air. It would be interesting to see. Should be no issue to get the song rights from Randy Newman again. Let's do it.

Imagine if you would "Hill Street Blues" meets "Fame" through in a piece of "The Shield" and add a dash of "Moulan Rouge" as well as the Tony winning "The Life" and that pretty much sums it up.

"It ain't over till the fat lady sings" and I'm patiently waiting for her to belt out this brilliant show's premiere on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars A show MADE to be released on DVD if ever there was one, July 17, 2005
This review is from: Cop Rock (DVD)
Cop Rock was so ahead of its time, I betcha if it came out anew today it would be one of the hippest and most celebrated things on TV. And of course it's far more likely that an adventurous cable network would mount something along these lines today. To think that a major network took a risk on a show this unlike anything else ever done for television (think Dennis Potter's The Singing Detective but with original songs) is remarkable. So bring it back on DVD already! I think today's more adventurous TV audiences would be amazed to discover a show of this quality that was completely missed at the time.

The matter-of-fact way that the show was able to mix musical numbers with some really gritty cop-show drama gave Cop Rock a tone more sophisticated than most network shows, a kind of we-dare-you-to-laugh seriousness that nonetheless did laugh at itself openly in lighter moments. And its treatment of police/politician/citizen dynamics was savvier than most cop shows too (thanks to producer Steven Boccho's Hill Street Blues experience).

This show would be a cult favorite if only people could get to see it again. We're waiting....

5.0 out of 5 stars the real cop show, February 24, 2006

This was the real cop show; it may have been quirky but it got to the heart and soul of law enforcement. The pathos, ethical and emotional dilemmas were authentic. I tried years ago to get a copy for my ethics class in CRJ...the music is phenomenal...not since the "Choir Boys" has there been anything this good. You'll recognize some actors who have gone on to star in many movies and tv shows...it is an American folk opera and deserves to be rescued from obsecurity.

Only need two reasons to put this out on DVD, great ending with the fat lady and Kathleen Wilhoite's song when she gives her baby up. Kathleen was in three episodes and I don't remember which one had the song, I don't even remember the name of the song. But the performance still gets to me 16 years later.

5.0 out of 5 stars We want the Fat Lady to Sing Again, February 16, 2006
This review is from: Cop Rock (DVD)
The best program on TV ever, period. The fact that it was rated last explains why we are in the political mess today. The last episode was amazing with its ending. In addition, the song the police women sing in the locker room advacnes women lib by many orders of magnitude. These police women explain in wonderful song what they are going to do to the rapist when and if they catch him. The song couldn't be put on TV today. Please release a high quality audio DVD, my old S-VHS tapes are wearing out.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cop Rock, The Best, July 23, 2005
This review is from: Cop Rock (DVD)
Cop Rock was one of my favorite shows on TV even for its short run. I really think it was far ahead of its time and should be released on cable for us die hard watchers. Like so many shows (like Star Trek) that bombed when it was on regular TV, as a re-release it would become a cult classic.

4.0 out of 5 stars Before it's time, February 28, 2005

This was a great show, definitely before it's time. It featured gritty performances that were interlaced with fun. The show wanted the audience to not take it so seriously--it's TV, for gawd's sake!

Trio showed this, but somehow managed to miss 3 episodes, which makes it difficult to tape. Hopefully, it will be released on DVD.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Incredible Feat, June 23, 2005
This review is from: Cop Rock (DVD)
Cop Rock charted the dramas and emotions of its characters using music and dance. Like the use of the chorus in a Greek drama, Cop Rock's format was initially off-putting; but once the strangeness wore off, the series was able to effectively juggle the nuances of being human in an inhumane world. An incredible feat!

5.0 out of 5 stars Dared to be different!, December 23, 2006
This review is from: Cop Rock (DVD)
I agree that this show ought to come back on DVD. No matter if it wasn't popular or a financial success? Just because "real cops don't break out in song" -- really how many TV shows (esp. sitcoms) are "real" anyway? I also confess, I like opera and Broadway, and the premise is the same for all of them -- music is a great expression of emotions, and I thought that most of the songs in Cop Rock actually were suitable for the plot. I liked the ensemble as well as the individual performances both dramatically and musically. I would definitely buy a DVD if it were available. I also loved the self-deprecating but entertaining finale and cast singing the song about how much money they lost. It made me sad that a TV show failed because it couldn't fit people's expectations. I daresay it might have a better chance in today's cable environment, even if not on one of the "big three" networks.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cop Rock rocked, May 27, 2005
This review is from: Cop Rock (DVD)
This was, by far, one of the most unique and watchable shows ever put on TV. Some great singers, fantastic songs and staging and very unusual, it is amazing that it was so universally reviled.; just goes to show you that most of the viewing audience had absolutely no idea of what makes great entertainment. I had the whole series on VHS but it got lost in a move and would love to be able to watch it over again.
