Biography

Brassens was born in Sète, a town in southern France near Montpellier. Now an iconic figure in France, he achieved fame through his elegant songs with their harmonically complex music for voice and guitar and articulate, diverse lyrics; indeed, he is considered one of France's most accomplished postwar poets.

5.0 out of 5 stars Le bon chanteur avec la mauvaise reputation, May 25, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Les Copains D'abord (Audio CD)
C'est indispensable, cette collection. Goerge Brassens (1921-81) was a great French folk singer whose songs ranged from tart social criticism ("Les Amoureux des Banques Publiques", "La Mauvaise Reputation") to surprisingly tender and wistful tunes ("Une Jolie Fleur", "La Parapluie".) The songs demand repeated listenings and reveal - albeit with some patience - Brassens' lyricism and earthy beauty. A good compromise set for those who want more than just a greatest hits but don't want to spend beaucoup des frics on the 10-disque collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Johnny Cash's mellower French cousin, October 19, 2011

This review is from: Les Copains D'Abord (Audio CD)
Johnny Cash in a good mood, Seu George, Leo Kotke (songwriting, not the guitar style), a touch of Django Reinhardt come to mind. Mellow, folky, sometimes funny, beautiful music.

5.0 out of 5 stars IT'S LES COPAINS NOT LES COUPAINS, October 22, 2000

ALAIN ROBERT (ST-HUBERT,QUEBEC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Les Copains D'abord (Audio CD)
You guys who want to know BRASSENS without spending for the complete 12 cd collection, here's your chance.Buy buying this you get 5 masterpieces(LE GORILLE, CHANSON POUR L'AUVERGNAT,SUPPLIQUE...,LES TROMPETTES DE LA RENOMMEE and LES COPAINS D'ABORD ).You also can hear some lesser known tunes that deserves to be there. In all ,this is a excellent overview of his career ,and a good way to get acquinted with him.Beware of BRASSENS if you are afraid of graves because sometimes it is a theme quite obsessive with him.Dig in my friend and stop being afraid of the dark.
