Not too 'Thermal' but large capacity and sleek.....,
This review is from: Copco Big Joe 24-Ounce Thermal Travel Mugs, Set of 2 (Kitchen)
Did I say inexpensive too?? Brewed a pot of Kona coffee today and used my Copco Thermal Travel Mug for the first time. I was somewhat surprised to feel how warm the stainless steel exterior became. None-the-less, my coffee stayed pleasingly hot for more than 1 hour, and that was with the top removed.
There was no leakage. At less than $5.50 per mug (through Amazon), it is hard to rate this well-constructed beauty at any less than 5-stars! 11/19/06: Oops! Did discover this nice mug is a tad top-heavy!

Shame about the handles...,

Listen, the price is right, and they look nice enough. They also hold plenty of coffee (or whatever) and still fit in my car cup holder. BUT I really don't like the handles. More than the other reviewers I read. They are really bendy and I feel like they can barely support the weight of the empty mug, never mind full. Again -- you get what you pay for, I get that, but still the handles could be MUCh better

Good all-around 24oz travel mug,

I spent a lot of time looking for a 24oz travel mug that was usable both with and without the top on (most have the screw threads, but this one is rubber pressure sealed so you can drink out of it with the top off). It's very sturdy, with the exception of the handle which is a bit flexible, but not enough to cause any problems. The handle is attached to a ring around the top of the mug and is actually a separate piece so be sure to wash in the cracks if you drink with the top off.
In general, for a two-pack of these you can't beat the price vs. quality ratio. I have one of these at work and the other at home and both fit under the pod machines at those locations (a tight fit, but a fit none the less). I would definitely by these again.

THE item for those that need it,

Look, the only people who should be seriously considering this mug are people who need a mug that holds 24 ounces. These are mostly folks that drink 24 ounces of their beverage in the time it takes most folks to drink eight. If you're in that crowd, read on. If you're not - if you're looking for a system that will keep your coffee hot for eighteen hours, or that won't sully the impeccable flavor of your Guaruvian kitty-dung extra roast - look elsewhere.
OK, did all those dilettantes leave? If you're still reading, it's because you want a 24-ounce (or larger) mug, probably for hot beverages. If that's the case, you have only a few choices: the CopCo Big Joe (either single or double), the Thermos DF4010, or some plastic mugs offered mostly at hunting/camping or NASCAR sites. The ones from the hunting/camping sites won't fit into your car cupholders. The NASCAR ones look like they do, but some of them are so huge, they also look like they'll upset in your lap ever time you take a right turn. So I'm going to keep my comments to the CopCo and Thermos offerings. I bought both of them several months ago. I have used 'em more-or-less interchangeably since then, and I feel like I have enough information to make a decent review of each. I take my coffee with adulterants (milk & sugar), and I have not noticed any cup-taste being transferred to the coffee. Either of them will keep the coffee hot for the half-hour or so that I usually take to drink it. Both have handles that are only attached at the top: I notice that, when I put either into the car cupholder I usually use, the bottom of the handle extends below the top of the cupholder - so that if the handle WERE attached on the bottom, the mug would not fit into the cupholder correctly. I have not noticed any problem with looseness or weakness of the handle on either mug. The top of the Thermos mug has a slider to cover the drinking hole; the top of the CopCo dies not. The sides of the CopCo fit more snugly into my cupholder, and have rubber traction inserts that help to hold it in place. That said, however, I have not noticed that either has problems with looseness or insecurity in the cupholder. Neither is dishwasher-safe; the trapped air between the steel exterior and the plastic interior will expand in the dishwasher and possibly crack the plastic. The tops may be dishwasher-safe, but I have not risked them (hey, I'm washing the mug anyway; how tough is it to wash the top, too?). And the tops are NOT interchangeable one with the other. I like the CopCo better, but for no good reason I can figure out (it may be that I just don't like the tumblehome sweep of the shape of the Thermos as much). So pay your money and take your choice.

The size is Great!
The handles are OK. The TOP stinks! It is a sipper lid that does not have a slide to close off the sipper opening. If you leave the house with an armload of stuff and try to carry your mug you will probably spill coffee all over yourself- been there, done that! I have to cover the top with Stretch and Seal and then fit the lid over this in order to prevent spills. What seems like a great price for a giant mug turns out to be poor value because you have to buy plastic sealer, so not really convenient or cheap.

The 'Thermal & Travel' mugs, is an odd name for this offering. The mugs have a mouth piece, for to drink from.... But u can never close it!!! Most mugs u see, like at the nearby Walgreen's or Rite-Aid stores, or even at 7/11 stores, most mugs have an 'open/close' slide piece, so u can control the mug's mouth piece. But not our Thermal Travel Mugs, the ones that we find here. The mouth hole stays open, and there is no if-and-or but, about it. The heat will come out, and spilling, well, spilling will never have come so easy, as w/ this mug(s) here. Not recommended. (Boooooo.)

First time I used one of these, the bottom fell off and the entire thing pretty much disassembled itself, spilling scalding hot tea all over my hand. Obviously, I'm not too pleased with it.

the size is great for tea, it keeps it "warm" for aprox 2-3 hours, the only problem is the cap does not have a slidding part to close the lid

I usually don't write reviews (but appreciate them), but I think these mugs are so well designed, I wanted to give them a good review. I've had a lot of coffee mugs, but these are the best. The spout makes it easy to drink without dribbling. No sliding spout cover that will break later, or collect debris that you can't clean. The seal on top is tight, and looks like it will last. The bottom is screwed on, so you can tighten it if it loosens. So many other bottoms I've had use pads that fall off, or leak. This design uses a plastic inside, which is better than my last stainless ones that leaked and spewed water and hissed due to the temperature change in the hot coffee. The large size means I have to fill up less, and they keep the coffee very hot for a long time. The handle flexes a little, which I think is fine. I think it may have been designed that way, so that it doesn't break, like a skyscraper bends in the wind. If it were rigid and flexed, it may crack.
All around great product!!! I've got 4, and have thrown away all my old coffee mugs. |
