About the Author

Dr. Nora Cohen has worked in the field of gifted education for more than 27 years as a teacher, parent, initiator, coordinator for the Mentally Gifted Program for Philadelphia Schools, researcher, and professor. She has published more than 50 articles, books, and chapters related to the development of gifted young people. She was an associate professor in the TAG Institute at the University of Oregon, senior lecturer at the CHIP Unit at the University of Melbourne, and is presently an associate professor in the School of Education at Oregon State University. She is interested in a wide range of concerns related to able young people. She founded the Conceptual Foundations Division of the National Assocation for Gifted Children and served as president of the state associations for gifted in Pennsylvania and Oregon. She is the mother of Max and Elizabeth Cohen.

Dr. Erica Frydenberg is an educational and clinical psychologist and senior lecturer in psychology in the Department of Learning, Assessment, and Special Education, in the Faculty of Education at the University of Melbourne. Her main areas of research relate to understanding what concerns young people and how they cope. She has authored or co-authored more than 30 publications relating to adolescent concerns and coping. She and Ramon Lewis developed the Adolescent Coping Scale, an instrument designed for research and for use by counselors. The Coping Scale for Adults is scheduled for publication in 1996. She has served as a foundation member of the Psychologists Registration Board and is a fellow for the Australian Psychological Society. This book is really 2 books - one for adults and one for kids. The adult side is interesting, but is a little short on what to do. The kid side, on the other hand, is wonderful! It really describes, in kids' words, what these kids feel and what sort of steps to take or things to think about. My "capable" children are 12 and 9, but I would like even the 9-year-old to read this book.

There is lots of good information in this book. The kids side is a much easier read. My 11 year old son keeps picking up the book and thumbing through it and I get good stuff out of the kids side, too.

The adult side is very text-book. The writing style is awkward and hard to follow. However, if you stick with it past the first 100 pages, you can begin to find information that is applicable. Most of the first bit is background and theory.

I am purchasing a sceond copy of this book as a year-end thankyou for our G&T program coordinator.
