From solving social problems, to dealing with perfectionism, and developing time-management strategies, to mastering goal setting, this book is the most comprehensive, up-to-date guide for gifted kids, their parents, and teachers. Based on years of research and experience, this book is actually two books in one—an exciting easy-to-read, high-interest book for bright students and a book for parents and teachers.

For Bright Students! The student section of the book helps gifted kids master the strategies they need to be happy and successful by actively involving them in understanding the problems they face and in using the strategies needed to cope with them successfully. Topics include separating facts from feelings, stress, peer pressure, being introspective, dealing with authority, social issues, depression, and much more. Written just for students, this section provides thought-provoking activities that lead to coping skills.

For Parents and Teachers! The parent and teacher section defines who capable kids are, the problems and needs they face, and the many ways parents and teachers can help them develop coping strategies. Topics include the definition of giftedness, emotional development, social development, moral development, perfectionism, boredom, drug and alcohol abuse, eating disorders, family functioning, and much more. Extensive and current reference and resource listings are included.

Editorial Reviews

Review

Coping for Capable Kids is a two-in-one guidebook . . . The parent/teacher component to Coping for Capable Kids is an informative beginning read. The authors define giftedness and discuss its aspects at length, as well as common problems that gifted children may encounter . . . The student edition for Coping for Capable Kids is a user friendly guide for capable children. The authors clarify the terms "coping" and "capable," delve into how emotions work and what young people can do to change their negative thinking, and the 18 coping strategies created in the development of the ACS . . . Coping for Capable Kids has the potential to be an instructive resource for parents, teachers and students. --Davidson Institute for the Gifted - January 1, 2006

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic - especially for the kid, November 15, 2002
This book is really 2 books - one for adults and one for kids. The adult side is interesting, but is a little short on what to do. The kid side, on the other hand, is wonderful! It really describes, in kids' words, what these kids feel and what sort of steps to take or things to think about. My "capable" children are 12 and 9, but I would like even the 9-year-old to read this book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Kids side better than adults, April 30, 2011

This review is from: Coping for Capable Kids (Revised) (Paperback)
There is lots of good information in this book. The kids side is a much easier read. My 11 year old son keeps picking up the book and thumbing through it and I get good stuff out of the kids side, too.

The adult side is very text-book. The writing style is awkward and hard to follow. However, if you stick with it past the first 100 pages, you can begin to find information that is applicable. Most of the first bit is background and theory.

I am purchasing a sceond copy of this book as a year-end thankyou for our G&T program coordinator.
