Book Description

Overcoming Common Problems June 15, 2006
Pet loss has grown as an area of concern, with greater awareness of this kind of grief. Company and affection are the number one benefits from pets, and three-quarters of dog owners consider their pet as a child or family member. Small wonder that losing a companion animal can be devastating. It can upset a young family, present children with their first experience of death, and may also be an unwelcome rite of passage for teenagers. For older people, it can mean the complete disruption of their daily lives -- at least 40% rely on a pet for daily exercise. For some, pet loss evokes unresolved mourning issues from earlier losses and can have serious emotional implications. Subjects in this book sympathetic and comprehensive book include: ?Stages of grieving ?When mourning mask deeper problems. ?Dealing with those who don?t understand ?Helping children cope ?Considering euthanasia ?Missing: when pet loss isn?t death related ?Special loss: losing a service dog ?Remembering a pet ?When to get another pet

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for pet owners of all backgrounds., August 4, 2007
This review is from: Coping with Pet Loss (Overcoming Common Problems) (Paperback)
Written by bereavement counselor and licensed psychotherapist Robin Grey, Coping with Pet Loss is a straightforward guide for readers of all backgrounds to dealing with the loss of a pet. In a sympathetic and compassionate tone, chapters discuss how to help children cope, pet loss late in one's life, issues concerning euthanasia, loss of a service dog, remembering one's pet, how to know when one is ready to get a new pet, and much more. "'Bruno went to the vet's and they said he had to be put to sleep.' This statement is based on what the vet may have said, but it potentially creates anxieties about sleep. What about when you tell your child to go to sleep? This can translate into fears about going to bed or having hospital treatment. It is better to let the vet explain that the pet's life has to be ended to avoid it suffering too much, linking this to behavioral changes in the pet that your child may have noticed in the last few months." Highly recommended for pet owners of all backgrounds.
