Discusses migraines and other kinds of headaches and what can be done to get rid of them.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up-This straightforward, factual presentation covers different kinds of headaches and migraines, including their symptoms, causes, triggers, and prevention. Medication and alternative treatments such as yoga, meditation, massage, and acupuncture are discussed, as are recommendations relating to sleep and exercise. Personal stories are included. A minor but annoying problem is that the statistics about the number of people affected by this problem and days of work and school missed because of it are undocumented. Web sites and e-mail addresses of organizations to contact for further information are listed. A starting place for both headache sufferers and researchers.

From Booklist

Gr. 7^-12. Votava adds a new volume to the ever-expanding, rather uneven Coping series, introducing a subject that isn't usually covered in books marketed to teenagers. Actually, with the exception of a few scenarios featuring young adults and an older teen pictured in the cover photo, there isn't much that would prevent this overview from being useful to adults. The author includes lots of information and presents it without an overload of medical jargon. She takes a look at different kinds of headaches, symptoms, and triggers; and after slipping in a note about the wisdom of consulting a doctor, she provides an extensive discussion on treatments (self-help, alternative therapies, and medications), introducing them in a fairly nonevaluative context. Boldface headings break up the dense format and make it easier to locate specifics. There is only one internal illustration; however, the cover photo is both attractive and appropriate.
