3.0 out of 5 stars outdated
The factual material - including medical information and Internet resources - is largely outdated. In my opinion the book should be updated or removed from current printing. It seems unfair to sell health care consumers who seek information on treating brain injury with factual information that is not useful.

Take this book as an understanding of the sciences...

5.0 out of 5 stars The answer to my prayers!, October 5, 1999

This review is from: Coping with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (Paperback)
I have suffered from disabling TBI for 4 1/2 years, and it went undiagnosed for over 2 1/2 years. I consulted doctors at several of the most esteemed medical facilities in the country, and they couldn't figure out the cause of my mysterious symptoms. The authors of this book are the first to explain every single bizarre symptom I have, from the hissing in the ears to the dizziness, disoriention, and visual disturbances. I am deeply grateful that these two brilliant women have helped me in a way that top neurologists have been unable (or unwilling) to. Even the doctors who found brain damage in test results could not explain all the symptoms. This book is the most comprehensive source of TBI information I have seen anywhere. It is a must have for patients with TBI, as well as family members, friends, and the doctors who treat these patients.

The book offers suggestions that include not only conventional medicine, but also alternative medicine, and practical, compensatory techniques. The authors emphasize rehabilitation, which is often helpful when drugs fail, and it does not cause the troublsome side effects. Thank you for this wonderful resource!

I am an attorney. I represent a substantial number of people who have sustained "mild" traumatic brain injuries. I have many books in my personal library on this subject. I must say that this book is easily the most accessible and well written I've encountered on TBI. Almost every day I recommend this book to someone. I've handed it out to so many of my clients, and to clients' family members, that I'm contemplating a bulk-rate purchase. On many occasions, I've heard back from people to whom I've given this book, and it's as if a light goes on in their heads. They finally understand that they (or their injured family member) are not "going crazy," that their illness is real. It is gratifying to get this feedback because, for many, it's a first step into their new life. If you (who are reading this review) are a TBI survivor, or a friend or family member of a TBI survivor, I highly recommend purchasing, reading, and inwardly digesting this fine book.

5.0 out of 5 stars Finally ... an answer, September 3, 2000

Finally after 2 years of suffering, a foray to the bookstore figured out what was wrong with me! Not only does this book explain everything in simple English, but it also gives exercises you can do to get better and offers names and web sites of resources. It is also beneficial in helping loved ones understand the injury and gives them tips to help. Every psychologist and physician I know now has a copy. One neuropsychologist I gave the book to recommends it to all her MTB injured patients, and quotes it in her accident reports. An excellent book!!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Life-Saver, December 21, 1998

This review is from: Coping with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (Paperback)
This book is a MUST READ for all mTBI survivors, family, and friends. This book does an outstanding job of describing an invisible injury that defies explanation until you see it in print. I am a survivor and Thank God I found this book. It is clear, concise, and right on target.

One of my therapists recommended this book to me - and boy what a difference it makes to know that I'm not alone, that I'm not going crazy, and that things are not as hopeless as they appear.

I don't know if I would have gotten through the trials and tribulations after the car accident last year if it weren't for this wonderful book (along with "Brainlash by Gail Denton). I actually put yellow sticky notes on dozens of the pages and took it in with me when I went to see my doctor. It was SO HELPFUL.

If you've been in a car accident or been through any kind of head trauma and have been having trouble getting "back to normal", then get this book. It will help.

5.0 out of 5 stars A must read, very insightful, helpful and comprehensive, December 3, 1998

This review is from: Coping with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (Paperback)
If you or someone you care about is dealing with mild traumatic brain injury or concussions this is an excellent book. The technical aspects of brain injury are explained in plain english. The remainder of the book is well written and insightful. The book explains a very inexact ailment in very understandable terms. It discusses "post concussive syndrome" with the its hundreds of different symptoms which appear and disappear. This is one book that will help everything come together in a clear and concise way.

AN EXCELLENT READ ON A TOUGH SUBJECT.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Valuable Tool for Family, November 11, 2004
This review is from: Coping with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (Paperback)
My late husband suffered an MTBI in an auto accident. He wasn't diagnosed until 1 1/2 years later. He had a difficult time expressing what he was feeling and experiencing day to day and it was difficult for me to understand why he acted the way he did. This book helped us communicate. It filled in the gaps so I could see what my husband was trying to tell me and it made him feel "normal" to know others were going through similar experiences. There are many resources for people with "serious" traumatic brain injuries, but few for mild injuries. This is a must-read for anyone who has a loved one with an MTBI.

5.0 out of 5 stars What a godsend!, December 10, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Coping with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (Paperback)
The bad news is that I didn't find this book till 1 1/2 years after my husband's brain injury. The GOOD news is that I found this book, just 1 1/2 years after my husband's brain injury! I'm insisting that his children and my siblings all read it. Our anger and frustration over the myriad changes in him have nearly ended our 20-year marriage. This book is giving us the information we need to begin asking the right questions and finding some answers. Thank God, we are not alone in this.

5.0 out of 5 stars coping?, June 27, 2002

"rambla" (austin, tx United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Coping with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury (Paperback)
This book was recommended to me by a referral clinic as one of two volumes that are helpful in explaining brain injury.

Coping with Mild Traumatic Brain Injury is an excellent and informative book. It is very difficult to find a comprehensive explanation for the symptoms of tbi much less a solution for dealing with the problems.

Before coping can begin identifying the problems is necessary. This volume provided enlightenment and hope to me where years of seeking treatment have left a sense of doubting my own perceptions and reality and sense of self.

Just to know "yes, this IS happening to me" has made a world of difference in the experience of recovering in what is often a lonely, frustrating and disappointing journey.

This account by someone who has experienced brain and psychic trauma has a quality of truth that cannot be mistaken.
