Gr 7-10-Two clearly written, well-organized titles. Self-Mutilation is an accessible volume that defines this self-destructive behavior and takes a look at the causes and physical and psychological effects. Emphasis is placed on self-help measures and available treatment. Brief, personal stories and profiles illustrate the author's points. Scoliosis looks at the patterns of spinal curvature, treatment options, and emotional effects of this condition. From scientific explanations of Cobb angles (a measurement system designed to help classify spinal curves) and the Risser scale (to determine bone maturity) to firsthand descriptions of peer ridicule and feelings of embarrassment, this text fully explores the physical and emotional issues involved in the diagnosis and treatment of scoliosis. Pencil drawings include illustrations of the spine and the types of orthopedic braces patients wear. Both books give helpful, factual information while offering reassurance and hope.-Christine A. Aimed at Young Teens,
By A Customer
This review is from: Coping with Scoliosis (Library Binding)
The previous reviewer did not like this book. It should be noted, however, that this particular book is aimed at fairly young scoliosis patients, probably the adolescent just recently diagnosed. If you are looking for more detailed material or are an adult facing surgery, you should look elsewhere that is certain. However, for the young person newly diagnosed, this book seemed to me to be fairly well written and at a grade level easily understood by most preteens and teens. I would certainly be more reluctant to put anything as detailed as some of the other books in the typical young person's hands. This book is one of the few aimed specifically at young people, and covers most of the areas for young scoliosis patients.

Don't bother...,
By A Customer
This review is from: Coping with Scoliosis (Library Binding)
This book I ordered from amazon.com and it arrived today. It was very simple and not very detailed at all. I read the bulk of it in a very short period of time. I have been recently diagnosed with scoliosis and am having surgery soon. This book was not very helpful at all. If anything, it made me more confused and less adjusted to the surgery. I do not recommend this to anyone, unless they haven't really done any previous research. I can imagine it helping someone who has not been to a doctor yet or someone who is unsure. Overall, this book is not very good and I feel if you are preparing for surgery you should get a different book. Do not waste your money on this. Try "Ascending the Curve", also at amazon.com. I have ordered that, too, and it hasn't come yet. It was requested to me by lots of people who are going through the same thing I am, though.
