Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 9 Up-- Simpson presents a positive, nonjudgmental guide for married or single teens in all stages and situations of childbearing. Her stated purpose is to show readers that ``there are many ways to face the experience, and that when something bad happens (maybe your parents throw you out or your boyfriend dumps you), there are still many alternatives.'' She offers sound information on what to expect physically and emotionally, the need for careful planning before considering another pregnancy, birth-control methods, sexually transmitted diseases, equipment needed for the baby, and agencies that can help young women with the many changes that the new responsibility brings to their lives. Highly personal anecdotes and the comments of teenage mothers make the text readable and appealing. However, some descriptions of labor and delivery, while meant to be honest and reassuring, may instead be frightening. Only one sentence is devoted to abortion; similarly, adoption is merely mentioned. --Sue A. Norkeliunas, Arlington Senior High School, LaGrangeville, NY
