From School Library Journal
Gr 8-12 A readable guide to coping assertively. McFarland defines assertiveness as taking control of oneself and expressing feelings in appropriate waysbut always with dignity and respect for self as well as for others. She demonstrates assertive, passive, and aggressive behaviors; analyzes the appropriateness of various coping mechanisms; and explores ways to deal with criticism. McFarland provides a seven-step plan for becoming assertive. Most young people will be able to relate to the problems presented. The index and chapter arrangement are useful in allowing readers to zero in on specific problems or issues. This useful self-help book is similar in content to, but is for better readers than, Mary E. Mihaly's Getting Your Own Way: a Guide to Growing Up Assertively (Evans, 1979). A good book to share with guidance counselors, who may also recommend it to teens to ease the pain of coping with adolescent pressures. Sue Diehl, Robertsville Junior High School, Oak Ridge, Tenn.
