Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 7-12-- Despite its title, this book offers little in the way of coping skills. The text is basically a collection of scenarios that demonstrate the dilemmas various young people have faced upon learning that one of their parents is gay. These stories, which at times are credible and at other times are extremely contrived, are followed by groups of questions directed to readers. Neither potential resolutions nor answers are discussed; support groups are mentioned only in an appended list. Emotional reactions, strains, pressures, and ways to overcome personal attitudes are hardly addressed. Each example is so strongly designed to evoke sympathy toward the children of gay parents that the book may actually be more detrimental than helpful to the issue. Although other titles in this series have been aimed at YAs, this one seems intended for older readers, e.g., the first chapter asks readers about their home lives in the past tense, as if they have moved away. While the book contains some reassuring ideas and may dispel some concerns, it will not fully serve those seeking solid advice for getting along. Its assets are an annotated reading list and a detailed index that will lead students to bits of information for reports. The bibliography includes titles from 1948 through 1992. --Dona Weisman, Northeast Texas Library System, Garland

By A Customer
This review is from: Coping When a Parent is Gay (Library Binding)
This book is geared mainly towards young teenagers whose parents have just come out. It is helpful for its target audience in providing support and tips on dealing with difficult situations as far as homophobia is concerned and also provides a fairly extensive list of resources that children can contact to meet others in similar situations
