Book Description

May 1992 Coping
Suggests how to deal with the physical limitations of the parent who has multiple sclerosis, and how to cope with the emotional stress that the disease places on the entire family.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 5-12-- Writing from personal experience, Cristall explains to young people how living with a parent who has multiple sclerosis will affect their lives. After a brief overview of the symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment of the disease, she discusses its psychological effects on patients, and devotes attention to the additional responsibilities and stress on family members. The lucid text is upbeat in tone, but acknowledges that there will be difficult times and that some families fall apart. The author combines practical advice for daily living such as how to balance chores and activities, and offers suggestions of where to go for more help. An extensive appendix gives addresses and phone numbers for Multiple Sclerosis Society chapters in the U. S. and Canada. LeShan's When a Parent Is Very Sick (Joy St, 1986) discusses feelings on a simpler level. Lechtenberg's The Multiple Sclerosis Fact Book (F. A. Davis, 1988) is an accessible adult book that explains the physical and emotional aspects of the disease in more detail. Many readers will appreciate the support and advice contained here.

This review is from: Coping When a Parent Has Multiple Sclerosis (Library Binding)
I read this book because my cousin has a similar disease and I was looking for resources for her teenage daughter. This book is an excellent overview of the grieving process that a family goes through when they realize that a disease is going to change their lives forever. It gives teenagers practical advice on where to look for help, coping with your parent's anger and frustration, and balancing caring for yourself and your parent. I also read "Coping with Being Gifted" in the same series and it was just as well written and balanced.
