Editorial Reviews

Review

“Finally, a cutting-edge book that delivers hope and end confusion about a common sexual difficulty that affects so many men and their partners. Metz and McCarthy’s biopsychosocial approach to understaning and treating PE goes beyond traditional and often ineffective treatments for a sexual problem that troubles so many couples. Coping with Premature Ejaculation has it all.”
—Julian Slowinski, Psy.D., coauthor, The Sexual Male, assistant professor, department of Psychiatry, University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine, AASECT certified sex therapist

“This is an excellent, easy-to-read self-help book which is unique in that the treatment recommendations are individualized. Upon opening the book and reading the first pages, one immediately knows that two master therapists, with years of experience treating sexual problems, wrote this book. In a nutshell, this book is a gem.”
—Robert Segraves, MD, Ph.D., author, Sexual Pharmocology, professor of Psychiatry at Case Western Reserve University, and editor, The Journal of Sex and Martial Therapy

“This is not only a practical, state-of-the-art manual on dealing with premature ejaculation, but also an enlightenment guide to a richer, deeper relationship. The author’s knowledge, wisdom, and compassion come through on every page. Readers who follow the authors’ counsel about sex an dlove end up glad that a problem with premature ejaculation led them to this remarkable book.”
—William J. Doherty, Ph.D., director of the Marriage and Family Therapy Program, University of Minnesota, and author, Take Back Your Marriage

“This is a highly readable book…clear and concise. Drs. Metz and McCarthy provide the latest information and present a new, innovative, comprehensive, biopsychosocial approach to the treatment of premature ejaculation, themost common mal esexual disorder. I recommend it highly.”
—Pierre Assalian, Md, director, Human Sexuality Unit, McGill University Health Center and president of the 17th World Congress of Sexology, Montreal, 2005

“This is the most comprehensive guide to dealing with premature ejaculation I have ever seen! It addresses subtypes, cognitive, emotional, and behavioral components, medical issues, relapse, and the ever-important influence of the couple’s relationship on the cause and cure of this disorder. Drs. McCarthy and Metz have not only done a great service to couples experiencing this problem, but to sex therapists as well. I will definitely recommend the book to my clients and will incorporate its exercises in my treatment protocol.”
—Jean D. Koehler, Ph.D., president, American Association of Sex Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT)

Coping with Premature Ejaculation is chock-full of great suggestions for improving one’s sex life. Written by two experienced sex therapists, the book offers sound advice and sensible suggestions for gaining control over ejaculation and, more importantly, for becoming a better lover!”

“Finally, an updated, comprehensive guide for a problem that affects millions of men and their partners. These highly respected authors in the field of sex therapy bring years of clinical experience and insight to these pages in a format that’s masterfully helpful. This is a great book, and I plan to recommend it to all my patients who struggle with premature ejaculation.”

5.0 out of 5 stars Great book about PE November 28, 2008
Format:Paperback
The most amazing thing about this book is it's approach to the matter of premature ejaculation. It gives you an answer for all your questions. It means that you'll get to know which type of PE you have and how you have obtained it. Then it gives you the procedure how to cure it. This is particulary good in the way that you know which circumstences caused your PE, which aspects of your life you have to concentrate on and which to change. When you know these facts you'll get more comfortable and self-confident because it gives you the impression that PE is something that is cureable.

I have already read several books on this matter. Like the book by Barbara Keesling, then the 'Multi-Orgasmic Man', 'Multi-orgasmic couple', books by Margot Anand and her DVD, 'Tantra' by Andre Lysebeth, 'Tantra & Tao' by Gilly Smith, 'A Chakra & Kundalini Workbook' by Jonn Mummford and another book about Kundalini which I don't remember the author's name. These Tantra books are nice and they bring something new to your thinking about sex and relationship, but the techniques won't help unless you believe absolutely in energy and it's flow. For some it's not so easy to imagine.

Another thing is the use of the Pubococcygeal Muscle described in almost all of these books including this one. In the Tantric books you are instructed how it is important to squeeze it before the point of no return and how to imagine the flow of the energy and the importance of pumping it to your head and who knows where else. 'Coping with Premature Ejaculation' teaches you how to relax it and your whole body(however, this depends on the type of PE you have) which is far more important because eventually you'll get relaxed during intercourse being completely aware of your feelings and your partner what you would not achieve with the Tantric books (at least, I wasn't able to) because you would be distracted by your imagination.

I can only recommend you this books. It works for me, although I haven't finished reading it, and as for now I do the individual exercises, but I have already noticed progress and that just after few weeks of reading. I haven't noticed such change even after I have completely read the Tantric books mentioned above.

5.0 out of 5 stars This is a wonderful book! December 13, 2006
Format:Paperback
I am a sex therapist and sex educator, teaching at a large graduate school in the midwest. I use this book as a required text in my 'Treatment Strategies for Sexual Dysfunction' class. It is not only an excellent self-help book, it teaches clinicians how to think about and treat sexual difficulties. Barry McCarthy and Michael Metz are simply the best at what they do. I recommend this book to clients, students, and colleagues.

Bravo to two excellent sex therapists!

This video review covers a more detailed look at the contents, as well as my perceptions of the strengths and weaknesses of the book, who it is relevant to, and whether I think you should get it. My review is based on several years of research in this field and I encourage you to watch it as well as read other comments in the review section.
