Back in the middle part of the 20th-century the versatile composer/arranger/conductor Morton Gould was afforded the unique opportunity of recording a series of LPs for RCA Victor, while enjoying the unusual freedom of choosing the material to be performed. Mr. Gould embarked on the road "less-traveled" and treated classical music lovers to ventures into the realm of rarely performed and/or neglected works. From that period of fruition came releases devoted to Charles Ives, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Eric Coates, Dmitri Shostakovich, Carl Nielsen...and this treasury of music by Copland and Grofe. Now, decades after their releases on vinyl, Gould's and RCA's treatment of these works remains unsurpassed. The format of SACD further enhances the depth and grandeur of these superb recordings.

There are other fine offerings of these pieces (Leonard Bernstein's Copland recordings immediately come to mind) but Morton Gould adds an extra element, largely cinematic in scope, which continues to raise this performance and recording to the top of my list.

Grofe's Grand Canyon is at its GRANDEST through Gould's skillful reading, and the dynamic range of the recording rivals today's best methods and techniques.

If you're in the mood for a serious and exciting dose of musical Americana, this is the complete package. Don't miss it!

This CD offers superb performances and stunning sound with which to demonstrate audio equipment. There is no doubt that the two Copland scores are the finer music and will stand repeated listening. However Grofe's famous suite is highly enjoyable when performed and recorded with this care, and anyone looking for any of these three works should not be disappointed. I am refering to the basic CD layer which is all that I have heard. The SACD and three channel versions also on the disc should enhance the listening experience even further.

I replaced my worn LP records with this CD and was not disappointed. I had forgotten how clean a presentation you get with CDs compared with the record but this CD quickly reminded me.
