There is no opportunity to hear Beethoven or Mozart conducting their own works, so one must hear modern interpretations of the music, and no-one can say which performance most closely matches what was imagined by the composer. We are fortunate, however, to have surviving recordings of Stravinsky and Copland conducting their own works, and we can listen to those works purely and directly from the mind of the composer through the orchestra under his control. Of course, we often fall in love with the first performance we hear of a favorite piece, so perhaps Copland's interpretation isn't how you remember it. But it is the standard by which all other performances should be judged. These are wonderful recordings of groundbreaking music, and you would be remiss to pass up this opportunity to hear exactly what Copland meant.

This cd definitely met my expectations. The American composers are as deserving as the European composers and we often overlook cds such as this one when building a cd library. Aaron Copland is amazing!

I agree with one other reviewer who declared that the set of Old American Songs is the real star of this album. It truly is; indeed, I think it's the best set of versions available. Baritone William Warfield's voice is authoritative, and the performances are near perfect. The rest of the disc is certainly not bad, either, and with Copland conducting his own works you'd have to think these renditions have the stamp of authority as well. Of course, they also have intense competition with the classic Sony recordings conducted by Bernstein, as well as the more recent ones by Michael Tilson Thomas. Still, if you want a copy of the Old American Songs, this is the one to get, which nets you a fine Appalachian Spring as well as the Dance Episodes from Rodeo. Also included is the Fanfare for the Common Man, both the freestanding version and as a portion of the Third Symphony, as well as an excerpt from Billy the Kid. All in all, an intensely satisfying release, and highly recommended.

For once Sony did a spectacular job at remastering this historical performance. The opening percussions of Fanfare for the Common Man are just explosive but the whole disc is full of colors and a tribute to Copland's masterpieces.
Don't be afraid to listen to this disc at concert levels, that's how it is best enjoyed and the best way to discover one of the most impressive American contemporary composers.
I am less enamored with Warfield's performance of the Old American songs but in all fairness they've never been my cup of tea to start with.

I would encourage everyone to become familiar with Aaron Copland, but with so much other music we are exposed to, how do we learn about this genius? My hope is that they are still teaching him in school. He is truly an American treasure.
I would love to hear from other people who are as enamored and inspired by Copland as I have been all of my life.

I love Copeland and this is such a great rendition of his work. It's always fun to hear the composer direct his own work because you know it is being played as he would have it played.

Copland has always been my favorite 20th century composer. This recording of Copland conducting the Lomdom Philharmonic is wonderful. I was worried that the age of the recording would result in poor quality but the opposite was true. The sound quality is superb. If you Like Copland get this album.

This has always been one of my favorite albums; I bought this to replace my vinyl, and I still love it as much as when I first bought it. So many greats at once: Aaron Copland, William Warfield, and the London Symphony Orchestra.
