A high class accomplishment for young artists, February 1, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Copland: The Tender Land (Audio CD)
This is the fourth recording of the TenderLand and a welcomed one. Aaron Copland meant for this opera to originally be for young artists. Recordings before this have defied Copland's wishes and in my opinion never acheived the heart of this piece because of it. This new recording by the students of the University of Kentucky is a marvelous job at a challenging work. Highlights include the warmth of the orchestra overall, "Promise of Living" Quintet. As for the voices, they are young but full of a sense of character only a younger open minded singer possesses. My favorite is probably the alto which sang the part of Ma Moss. Her voice was for the the most part, extremely warm and quite passionate. A nice alto voice is so rare these days. Also the part of Laurie was well portrayed. All in all, a spectacular showing by one and all.
