Book Description

8 and up3 and up
On Copper Beech’s 10th birthday, her whole world changes. Her dear Aunt Ruby, who has raised her since she was a little girl, sends her away to the Marble Mountains saying she’ll be safe there. Safe? Safe from what? And why do the Marble Mountains feel so familiar? Why does living in an enormous Spindle Tree, with chairs that put you to sleep, spoons that shift to fit the form of your hand, and birds who are alarm clocks and fire lookouts, feel so comfortable?

Copper has never felt that she belonged as much as she does at Spindle House. The people she meets knew her mom and dad, and someone must know what happened to them. Copper is determined to steer clear of the threatening Rockers long enough to figure out the mystery—and maybe repair a family at the same time.

Copper grips readers right from the first page, and is certain to delight young fantasy and mystery fans.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3-6-Copper Beech's life with her eccentric Aunt Ruby has been happy and safe, but on the child's 10th birthday, everything changes. She is told that she is being pursued and must flee for her life onboard a train headed to the mysterious yet strangely familiar Marble Mountains. She takes with her Ralick, a well-worn, sarcastic stuffed animal with whom only Copper can speak; her magical charm bracelet; and her knitting needles, which she turns to whenever she feels at loose ends. On Marble Mountain, Copper meets her Wood Clan relatives who live in Spindle House, but everyone is oddly silent about her parents. Finding them becomes the quest that leads her into life-threatening danger and brings her face to face with the horrid Granite, leader of the enemy Stone Clan. The writing is lively, with humor, tension, and fast-paced dialogue. Especially charming are Ralick's acerbic quips and his sage advice to Copper as she unravels the mystery of her missing parents and ends the devastating feud. With enough excitement to be an excellent read-aloud, this well-crafted fantasy provides children with a solid entry into the genre.

From Booklist

Gr. 3-6. Copper lives in London with her aunt Ruby and her teddy bear, Ralick, until her tenth birthday, when she is forced to flee to the Marble Mountains. There she discovers the home she didn't know she had and the courage to bring her family back together again. With many inventive touches and a few melodramatic ones, this colorful fantasy pits Copper and her allies at Spindle House, an enchanted tree house, against the villainous inhabitants of the Rock, a cavelike stone fortress. This relatively short fantasy is packed with many characters, several settings, and a number of secrets to be revealed. For fantasy fans, the outcome is never really in doubt, but some readers, especially those new to the genre, will find Copper a sympathetic heroine, her teddy bear downright heroic, and her world a comfortable place for adventures.
