Dries out skin, leaves you white, doesn't wash off!
on July 5, 2012
This sunblock is effective. We used it for a week straight at the beach, every day, on ourselves and our 4 kids, age 2 to 7. They didn't get any burns.
It goes on very white and thick, and will kind of rub in with some elbow grease (if you can get your kids to stand still long enough to tolerate that, good for you!) The problem we found is that after a day of being in the sun, in the water, and rolling around in the sand, the stuff just doesn't come off in the shower. The eyebrows and hairline were especially difficult to get back to a normal non-white color. After I showered and scrubbed, when I looked at my arm creases I could still see white in the fine lines. I'm only in my early 30's and pretty fair, so it's not like I have very deep lines yet!
ALL of our skin was extremely dry after using this for a week. I'm not the kind of person to slather moisturizer on my kids; I feel that their bodies do a good job regulating that on their own. I had to go out and buy some baby moisturizer for them, and it still didn't do the trick. One week later, their skin still feels leathery (and it's not from being burned or overly tanned - my kids are all towheads with fair skin).
Lastly, this stuff is full of parabens. For something that supposed to be "pure" I'm not thrilled with the fact that I've been smearing parabens all over my family. The Water Babies version has the same effects; we bought both the green and pink bottles of this and have had the same results.
Overall, it works as a sunblock but I'm pretty disappointed in the side effects. I'm going to look for something else for the rest of our outdoor summer adventures.
UPDATE - I've found what works great for our family - one Kiss My Face Kids Sunstick (white) for everyone's nose, cheeks and forehead. It's a tiny bit crumbly to rub in but works great on all of us.
Blue Lizard Face is what I've been using on everyone's body. It's so much smoother to rub in than the Coppertone, and much less thick. It leaves only a tiny bit of white sheen when it's rubbed in, which doesn't take long to do at all. And it comes off in the shower - hooray! No dry skin problems to report either. The whole family is so much happier with Blue Lizard! and it's paraben free, too! (I chose the Face over the Baby because the skin deep website gave the Face a 2 and the Baby a 3. It was also cheaper where I bought it.)
