5.0 out of 5 stars the best July 3, 2009
This is the only sunscreen my family uses - hubby, son and me. As someone who has a family history of skin cancer, my dermatologist insists that I use a product with a *physical* barrier, not just chemical ones that wear off quickly. She favors zinc oxide, and this is one of only a few easy-to-find, moderately priced sunscreens that contain it - regular Coppertone Water Babies doesn't, so make sure you are picking up the "Pure & Simple" version. The ZO does make your skin very white when you first put in on. It takes a bit of rubbing to get it worked in, but the results are very worth it. No sunburns for any of us, and it holds up well to swimming and sweating (we reapply ever couple of hours, of course :) It's not greasy and doesn't irritate my son's sensitive skin. I hope Coppertone makes this product forever!

4.0 out of 5 stars A safe sunscreen...but August 8, 2010
Amazon Verified Purchase
I picked a sunscreen solely on the new Enviromental Study Group's recommendations--UVA/B accurate protection and no bad stuff like oxybenzone. Excellent for children, doesn't sting eyes. For the adult woman--you're going to get the dreaded white mask look which might look startling in office or social situations...for that department, I'm still looking. But for gardening, outdoor activities in places like sunny Texas--it is what I keep handy.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic inexpensive zinc-oxide based sunscreen November 8, 2011
By jlm
When I started using this product last year, it was the best physical sunscreen I could find that was moderately priced. At around $8 per bottle for a product that was 14% zinc oxide based, I figured I would give it a try. Like others have reviewed here, this is a fantastic sunscreen. The zinc oxide at 14% weight/volume is significantly denser than any other sunscreen I found on the market and provides fantastic protection.

I would also add that the things that keep me using it are also that it is fragrance free and has no smell at all, doesn't have that bitter taste that regular sunscreens have when you get them in your mouth, does not irritate my eyes, and it doesn't sting or irritate sensitive skin areas like around my eyes. Other people have said that it irritates eyes, but I did not find that to be the case at all. It does cast a haze if you get it in your eyes, but that is all.

I found a couple of catches with this product
-if it for some reason gets in my eyes, it sticks to my contacts and casts a white haze until I take them out and clean them.
-it rubs off on stuff like clothing and my cell phone, but does wash off.
-it is hard to rub it. While the micronized zinc oxide has no color, the the solute does and takes quite a bit of rubbing to get it to spread and evaporate

The reason I love this product is that for a very reasonable price, At 14% zinc oxide, it provides dense protection. Most other products labeled "with zinc oxide" really only contained a few percent and relied on chemical sunscreens for the majority of their protection. This sunscreen is exactly the same as Coppertone's "sensative & Fragrance free" sunscreen but I found it is cheaper when I buy it in this pink bottle.

4.0 out of 5 stars Reliable for kids in the pool! July 5, 2012
Safe & effective sunscreens are hard to find. Coppertone Pure & Simple is a good choice for us - rates well on EWG's report, and most importantly... WORKS! We have a pool in the backyard and three kids, aged 6, 4 & 1. This stuff takes a bit of time to apply as it's very thick, but it STAYS ON and doesn't require constant reapplication like some other "natural" sunscreens I've tried. The only drawback I've experienced is that it seems to dry out my kids' skin. We scrub them down in the tub to try and get it off & then slather them with lotion at night. A minor price to pay for not having sunburns! I have already recommended this to friends with little ones.

5.0 out of 5 stars Try it June 5, 2012
Wore this for ten days while in the tropics. Did not sunburn at all. Does not sting my eyes at all. Holds up well to swimming in the sea. Comes out of bottle fast and a little goes a long way. This is great stuff. Will buy again for sure.

4.0 out of 5 stars The Environmental Working Group rates this well June 1, 2011
The EWG rates sunscreen for health, they are the go-to experts for sunscreen ratings. For 2011, see [...].

All the best sunscreens are expensive, hard to find, or both. On the other hand, the "sensitive skin" and "pure and simple" lines of Coppertone only rated a 3 (1=best 10=worst), which is good, and they are well priced and easy to find.

I find this a perfect compromise.

5.0 out of 5 stars White face? Just keep rubbing. June 28, 2011
Amazon Verified Purchase
I ordered this to use this summer in the water on myself and my 2-year-old son. I don't know what other reviewers are talking about having a white face - this sunscreen IS harder to rub in, but if you keep rubbing, the white goes away. It works great, isn't terribly expensive for a "greener" sunscreen, and I am glad knowing that this product isn't super toxic to my son's and my health.

1.0 out of 5 stars Eye irritation extremely painful March 16, 2010
Normally a disciple of consumer reports who recommend this product as second choice and a best buy, my experience is that Coppertone Waterbabies SPF50 is a worst buy in that it somehow will get to the eyes on the driest of days even when there is no visible sign of perspiration. The effect, on my eyes at least, is really painful stinging and I was barely able to drive home from my walk location. Now I use Cotz which does not have this effect.
