Book Description

4 and upP and up
Crocodile has a big imagination. He's always thinking up fun, new things to do. But Crocodile has a big problem too. No matter what he does, all the other crocs in the pool copy him - every time! What can he do to escape the copy crocs? And if he does escape them - will he still have as much fun? This book features first time pairing of two very well established and successful picture book talents and a very distinctive and appealing central character, who children will immediately identify with. The book has bold and brilliant artwork, full of lovely, jokey details and a great sense of fun.

Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 4--Crocodile lives in a pool of water with many of his kind. He likes his home, but grows tired of being pushed, prodded, and crowded by the other crocs, so he sets out to find his own private space. Each time he discovers a tranquil place, his friends find him and join in the fun of his discovery. They copy him when he rolls in a mud puddle, sunbathes on the shore, floats on a log down a river, and sits on a mountaintop. Finally, Crocodile returns to his original pool and finds that he misses the warmth and companionship of his cohorts. He is happy when they return and subsequently each time he slips away on his own, he is pleased when they eventually join him. The lush full- and double-page paintings colorfully convey the subtle humor of this comical story. Painted in bright pink, Crocodile stands out from the rest of the cool-hued crowd. The rhythmic pacing and effective use of dialogue make this an ideal book for reading aloud. Pair it with George Shannon's Lizard Song (HarperTrophy, 1992) and Lizard's Guest (2003, both Greenwillow) for a storytime that celebrates silly reptiles.--Shawn Brommer, South Central Library System, Madison, WI

More About the Author

I wanted to be a professional soccer player for a long time, but I didn't make it. I liked school too, though, and my favourite subject was biology - so I became a biologist. I had a job at Stanford University, where I worked in a lab, wore a lab coat, and made new antibiotics. I was heading towards being a Professor, but I changed my mind and became a writer instead.

I write picture books for younger children, and a soccer series ('The Team') for older children. The Team has got great football players AND a Professor in it.

I grew up in England where I still live with my family, by the sea in Norfolk.

My favourite books:

A Ladybird book of 'The Three Billy Goats Gruff' started me off. I used to copy out the story, one painful letter at a time. I would underline in felt pen the words in the book I had copied.

When I was older I was hooked on 'The Famous Five' stories, but I also liked Annuals like 'Whizzer and Chips' and 'Monster Fun', and I had some great graphic novels about Dracula. At school we read 'Stig of the Dump', 'The Hobbit', 'Moonfleet', and 'To Kill a Mockingbird', all of which I still enjoy and admire. These books made me love stories and reading - and I was speechless when, not so long ago, I met the author of Stig!

4.0 out of 5 stars Second Grade Reviewers at The Potomac School, McLean, VA, April 19, 2007
This review is from: Copy Crocs (Paperback)
Our second graders highly recommend this repetitive tale of a positively pink reptile looking for some peace and quiet. Longing for solitude, one cranky crocodile decides to leave the crowd behind by attempting new jungle activities solo. Will the others honor his wishes to be left alone? Will the cantankerous croc relish in his new found freedom? His adventurous antics are captured in imaginative paint colors, childlike, cartoony style and unexpected page formatting-- all of which delights this audience of seven and eight year olds. Our young reviewers suggest taking a look at the end pages, then sharing this title aloud with a group of kindergarteners, first or second graders, and following the reading with a discussion about friendship.

4.0 out of 5 stars love the message about alone time and friends, September 8, 2010

This review is from: The Copy Crocs (Hardcover)
This book is a fun story with great illustrations!!! My 3.5 year old really enjoys this book. Tshe crocodile's efforts to find some alone time and space seem to really speak to my sons introverted self. But I think there is a good message in this book for him -- that it is fun to spend time alone but also fun to share activities with friends. This book also seems perfect for the kid who gets annoyed by a younger sibling wanting to follow him or her around.

5.0 out of 5 stars MY 3 1/2 YR OLD LOVES THIS AND SO DO I, March 23, 2009
This review is from: Copy Crocs (Paperback)
This is a quality childrens book, with cute illustrations and a simple tale that my daughter loves. The lesson I gleaned from the story: it champions individualism but also acknowledges merit in being social and having friends.
