Since first published in 1975, Judith Butcher's Copy-Editing has become firmly established as a classic reference guide. This new edition has been revised and redesigned to provide an up-to-date and clearly presented source of information for editors and for all those involved in the process of preparing typescripts and illustrations for printing and publication. The copyeditor is shown as an essential link between the authors and those who work on the actual production of the publication. The copyeditor ensures that the material is well organized, consistent and properly presented and helps remove any features that might cause unnecessary difficulty, expense or delay. From the basics of how to mark a typescript for the designer and the typesetter, through the ground rules of house style and consistency, to how to read and correct proofs, Copy-Editing covers all aspects of the editorial processes involved in converting author's typescript to printed page.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Bit Academic, August 22, 2001
This review is from: Copy-Editing: The Cambridge Handbook for Editors, Authors and Publishers (Hardcover)
If you live and die, and otherwise make your living based on that which the 'Chicago Manual of Style' has to say about copy editing, then you'll find your money is well-spent. However, for me, my money was better spent elsewhere.

As a marketing communications editor, I needed something for friendly with the journalistic world. I needed a book that considers the AP book the style-setter.

"Chicago" is a great book, and for some purposes, I use it. Not usually, but occasionally. With this in mind, "Copy-Editing : The Cambridge Handbook for Editors, Authors and Publishers" is the way to go. However, if you are ready to step up and put on some big bucks for an editing book, but need an AP-focused text, check out "Copy Editing for Professionals" instead.

I fully recommend "Copy-Editing : The Cambridge Handbook for Editors, Authors and Publishers," but only after you are sure it is what you need.

5.0 out of 5 stars The definitive work on the topic, November 24, 1998
By A Customer
This review is from: Copy-Editing: The Cambridge Handbook for Editors, Authors and Publishers (Hardcover)
My wife who has edited or translated over 250 books consults this book regularly. She tells me that people who know, use this book as their "Bible" along with the Chicago Manual of style. (For what it's worth, she prefers the Collins dictionary -- don't ask me which version! -- out of about 100 dictionaries she has.)This book is fairly pricey, some would say -- but it's worth every cent. Get it.
