Much more than a covers CD,
By Katrina Raleigh (New York) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Copycat Killers (Audio CD)
I was a little worried when I saw the Cobras latest was a cover CD, but when I finally got it in my CD player, all of my doubts were dispersed. Yes, these songs are covers, but they're much more than that. Cobra Verde puts their own glammy post-punk imprint on each tune, from a dusky, seductively ominous version of Pink's "Let's Get the Party Started" to a wild reworking of The Fall's "Diceman" to a smoky, groovy reworking of the Stones "Playing with Fire." My favorites, though, were the acoustic, yet driving, cover of New Order's "Tempation", the rocking update of Donna Summers "I Feel Love," and an achingly beautiful cover of Leonard Cohen's "So Long Marianne."
As you can see, the song selection is quirky and wide-ranging, revealing both the Cobras diversity and musical chops, and their impeccable taste in music. In reworking these songs by other memorable artists, they reveal new sides of themselves and highlight again their singular artistic vision of grit-and-glam passionate rock. (The only reason I did not give this five stars is that I reserve that top judgement for original music - maybe event the Cobras next CD!)
