Master the late Rembrandt's texture techniques from his cloth to his flesh textures. This video covers dragging with the brush, different glazing tricks, and other techniques to master the texture and glow of Rembrandt's later stage paintings. In this copy Derek Van Derven demonstrates a copy of a portrait from a detail of the painting "David and Uriah" done in 1665. Derek Van Derven has over 20 years of experience painting like the Old Masters, and several years of experience painting and copying Rembrandt's techniques. This guy is not a film star! And he has a lot of technical problems while making this video, but to be perfectly honest-- the tech issues provide a bit of comic relief from what is generally a pretty boring format.

This is a pretty good demonstration of one method of copying Rembrandt's technique; van Derven does a head study of Rembrandt's "David and Uriah" in oil paint. The commentary isn't bad, the instructions are very clear and the video doesn't really drag (this guy has gotta be destitute; he's hanging his canvas on a nail on the wall. His struggle to keep the painting on the nail is almost worth the price of the DVD). I actually learned a couple of valuable lessons that I have been able to apply to my own work.

Probably best-geared to the intermediate-level painter in oils, but I would definitely recommend this item. I felt it was a good investment (and after seeing this guy's working conditions, almost a charitable contribution!)

I cant believe I bought this. do not waste your money. He has no ability to teach and goes over very little. I saw a video on youtube which was cool and even bought some of the paint he recomended because he does have talent; however this video should have never been sold for this price and has a VERY MISLEADING title. maybe its worth a buck.

This DVD is useless. There are much much better instruction DVDs on how to approach the Old Masters technique although none of them can match a good workshop.
