A fan of copykat.com, I had been anticipating the release of Stephanie's new Dining Out at Home Cookbook. It arrived in the mail today and I immediately started browsing through.
The first thing I noticed was how the book is organized. It is set up very traditionally with a section for appetizers, soups, desserts, etc. There is even a drink section! There are also cute little icons used throughout the book to denote cocktail party, meat lovers, game day, vegetarian, etc.
I was delighted to see the vegetarian icon because, wouldn't you know I gave up meat just yesterday?!
I would suspect that many vegetarians would not look twice at this book, but I am very pleased with the vegetarian options.
I am immediately drawn to the fried rice, the squash casserole, and the fried shrooms. There are still others that could be made without the meat. I understand they would no longer be true CopyKats, but they would make a vegetarian very happy. I'm looking at the skillet cabbage. Yum! Vegetarians could leave out the bacon and still have a delicious side or maybe even a main dish. That said, if you're a vegetarian, this still may be worth a look.
My favorite part of this book (aside from the recipes) is the index. I'm a teacher. I just can't help myself! There is an alphabetical recipe index and also a listing of recipes by restaurant. How fun! That is exactly what I wanted to see and it was there! I am really enjoying reading the different options from each restaurant. It feels very familiar and comfortable, yet I feel like someone let me in on a big secret. Oh my Goodness! Banana Bread French Toast! I have to go cook something right now! ;)

You may have visited many restaurants like the Olive Garden, Outback Steakhouse, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, T.G.I. Fridays, Saltgrass Steakhouse, but you may not live near them. This book does a really good job of recreating those recipes that you have tried in these restaurants. This book contains many recipes from your favorite places.

What I really like about this book is that I can make the boiled shrimp and salsa appetizer from the Saltgrass Steakhouse, a lettuce wedge from the Outback Steakhouse, then have some pasta from the Olive Garden, and finish it with the T.G.I. Friday’s Vanilla Bean Cheesecake (which tastes better than the restaurant). You couldn’t get this from one place.

While no one can promise the dish tastes exactly like the restaurant, because so many restaurants don’t even cook their food where it is being served, you can make food that tastes very close. I like being able to swap an ingredient or two to make it my own. I can reduce fat, sugar, or make small changes and make the dish just like the way I want.

The recipes are clearly written and easy to understand. I love the at what I need to make the recipes are found in my grocery store. I give this book an A+ in copy cat recipes.

The Copykat.com's Dining Out at Home Cookbook 2 is filled with a good variety of restaurant recipes you can prepare in the comfort of your own home. What I love most about cookbooks like this is the ability to know what's in your food (important if you have allergies like I do) while saving money. I also love to prepare restaurant-style recipes at home as you can dine at home comfortably.

Some of the recipes you will find in this cookbook include:

Hostess Ding Dongs

IHOP Cinn-a-Stack Pancakes

Jack In the Box Eggnog Shake

Furr's Fresh Buffet Butter Chess Pie

Denny's Pancake Puppies

Dairy Queen Chocolate Cherry Blizzard

The Cheesecake Factory Oreo Cheesecake

Boston Market Sweet Potato Casserole

Arby's Chocolate Turnover

Big Boy Strawberry Pie

McDonald's Caramel Frappe

Luby's Creamy Grits

Publix Buttercream Icing

Red Lobster Shrimp Nachos

Sonic Root Beer Freeze

Starbucks Pumpkin Bread

You will find to linkable indexes to help find recipes. One index uses the restaurant name and recipes to link to the recipe. The other index lists recipes by type and is interactive.

Recommend.

I love to eat out, but we don't live near a lot of the big chain restaurants, so recreating them in my own kitchen is ideal. She has thought of everything in this book. Who knew I would be making my own Caramel Frappe' any time I please, AND it uses nonfat milk. She is also SO very helpful with tips, like if a recipe calls for grilled peppers, she includes how to grill peppers, both in the oven and on a stovetop. The Hooter's fried pickles are amazing, as are the IHOP Bacon Temptation Omelets and the Panda Express Broccoli Beef. And who knew you could make your own Vanilla Extract and it be better than the stuff you brought home from Mexico? I just can't wait to dig into all these and try things I hadn't even heard of. This will be one cookbook that can stay on my counter, but for now it's staying by my bed for my reading material. Love, love it! You'll be serving up Cracker Barrel Chocolate Pecan Pie, Cheddar's Texas Cheese Fries, and Outback Spinach and Artichoke Dip before you know it. Doesn't that get your appetite going?

More About the Author

I have been creating recipes on the internet since 1995. For 15 years, I have created recipes that people just like yourself can recreate in their own kitchen. During my college days I worked in a few restaurants, and ever since then I have been recreating your favorite dishes. CopyKat.com has been featured in large publications like the Wall Street Journal, Newsweek Magazine, and Woman's World.

Once I started to recreate restaurant style recipes, I didn't stop. Honestly, when I was in college, and right after, I couldn't afford to go out for dinner every night of the week. I wanted to recreate the taste of my favorite dishes at home. Little did I know that trying the Olive Garden Alfredo sauce would literally be a life changing moment.

For years I was asked when I was going to package up my recipes and make them available in print. So now, these recipes are available for the first time in a book format. I am so excited that I get the opportunity to share my most favorite recipes in print.
