Copyright in the world of digital information is changing at a fevered pace, even as educators and librarians digitize, upload, download, draw on databases, and incorporate materials into web-based instruction. It's essential to stay abreast of copyright law and fair use without information overload.

For fresh, timely insights and application of copyright law for librarians, educators, and academics, Professor Crews maps the territory in a dramatically revised edition of Copyright Essentials. Readers will:

Learn basic copyright definitions and key exceptions for education and library services
Find information quickly with key points sidebars, legislative citations, and cross-references
Understand the four factors of fair use and related court interpretations
Get up to speed on current interpretations of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act from a librarian-educator viewpoint

Highly praised in its 2000 edition, this book draws on cutting edge case law in 18 discrete areas of copyright, including specialized and controversial music and sound recording issues. Information professionals will find the tools they need to take control of their rights and responsibilities as copyright owners and users in this succinct, easy-to-use guide.

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Don't let the title fool you! This is really the revised and restructured Copyright Essentials (ALA, 2000). Crews addresses 18 areas of copyright in 5 parts. He begins with the scope of protectable works as well as works without copyright protection. Next, he discusses the rights of ownership, including duration and exceptions. He then explains fair use and its related guidelines. Part 4 focuses on the TEACH Act, Section 108, and responsibilities and liabilities. Lastly, Crews examines special issues such as the Digital Millennium Copyright Act. Four appendixes provide provisions from the Copyright Act, checklists for fair use and the TEACH Act, and a model permissions letter. A guide to additional reading, cases cited, and an index complete the book. Add this title to Simpson's Copyright for Schools (Linworth, 2005), Hoffman's Copyright in Cyberspace 2 (Neal-Schuman, 2005), Carrie Russell's Complete Copyright (ALA, 2004), and Rebecca P. Butler's Copyright for Teachers and Librarians (Neal-Schuman, 2004) for a completely up-to-date copyright-related reference section. Esther Sinofsky

5.0 out of 5 stars Terrific Text for Graduate Course, July 24, 2011
This review is from: Copyright Law for Librarians and Educators (Paperback)
I used this book as one of the required readings for a graduate library school course as it clearly sets out the law in a way that non-lawyers can understand. Several of my students commented and appreciated what an excellent choice for a text. I will continue to use this book and recommend it to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars First rate book for reading and teaching, April 5, 2011
This review is from: Copyright Law for Librarians and Educators (Paperback)
I've used this book several times to teach Digital Copyright to graduate library students. It is the best source, by far, that I've found. It is, at the same time, succinct, accurate, and a joy to read. Last semester I switched to another source, and that's when I really realized how good the Crews book is. It tells us just what we need to know, without confusing us or bombarding us with too much information.

I have to say, there is so much misinformation about copyright out there, that I'd recommend this to a general audience as well. It's a slim book, inviting to read, and without the errors that seem to riddle most copyright texts for beginners.

4.0 out of 5 stars Handy resource, January 11, 2011
This review is from: Copyright Law for Librarians and Educators (Paperback)
This is a very slender book (which makes the price a little painful), but I found it a very helpful overview of copyright law and a helpful reference to have on hand for looking up quick facts and basics.

The class I purchased for this also used it in conjunction with Edward Samuels's The Illustrated Story of Copyright (available online in its entirety for free), each of which complemented use of the other (Samuels's work going into further detail and examples than is allotted in Crews's book).
