So many topics tied together on the theme of coral!,

This review is from: CORAL: A PESSIMIST IN PARADISE (Paperback)
This is a short but jam packed book. Jones covers coral from all angles... and covers more than a dozen other seemingly unrelated topics at the same time! Beginning with the history of the discovery of coral, using Darwin's theory of the creation of atolls as the basis, he then moves out into the evolution of the planet and life on it, all related to corals and their early ancestors, and through topics as diverse as the development of the nuclear bomb, basic island biogeography, the discovery of the early cultures of the south pacific, the diamond industry, reactive oxygen's affect on aging of human cells, the evolution of plants, climate change and the Kyoto protocol... it's impressive and you find as you go it all links together so seamlessly and you hardly notice the transitions spanning the globe and epochs. It is remarkable in its breadth and witty at times, making it both interesting and enjoyable to read. I'm not sure I've read a book through which I learned so much in so few pages! Highly recommended for reading on your next visit to the beach or dive trip!
