For a beginner:
If you are new to protein skimmers the first thing to know is that you generally want to divide the "gallons rated" value by half. So this 100 gallon skimmer will best work for tank up to about 60 gallons.
Also, this is an in-sump skimmer meaning that it needs to be in a separate aquarium to do its job. It cannot be placed outside on a surface and always needs to be submerged in water. There are 2 water lines on this skimmer... the min water line is just about where it says "reef octopus" in on the acrylic tube and the top water line being just under the large black band under the collection cup. To give you an idea, this means the skimmer should be in a water level between ~6.5-10" of water when operating.

It's pretty easy to put together and don't expect much instructions from the manufacturer. LIke most marine products you have to look on message boards often to find support. Once put together, there is a red dial to adjust the bubble level in the skimmer so it collects the ideal amount of waste. There is no set amount the dial should be turned, you must play around with it for a few days to figure it out. On normal operation you should have to empty the collection cup about once a week.

A couple of issues with this for me was the skimmer just didn't skim as well as I would have liked it to, after playing with it for months now I still think it could do a better job at removing the junk from the water. Also, I wish that it would be easier to disassemble for cleaning purposes because it can get quite clogged and it's a pain to clean.

Final advise: shop around when looking for saltwater tank products online. Amazon many times does not have the cheapest price and you can find this and many products elsewhere for 25-40% cheaper.

I had originally purchased a coralife super skimmer as a HOB skimmer because it also functioned as an in sump skimmer had I ever decided to make the switch. About two months after purchasing the coralife super skimmer I went and added a sump to my system. The Coralife super skimmer worked ok as a HOB skimmer but terrible as an in sump skimmer. It was never consistent, constantly overflowed, and never produced a skim. I honestly don't know how I went 6 months with this skimmer not working and my corals still thriving.
Now to the Reef Octopus skimmer which I just purchased. Works great. First thing I noticed was a much better construction than my previous coralife skimmer. The skimmer cup is friction fit into the protein skimmer on the reef octopus which is very desirable as it was never easy to screw the skimmer cup back onto the coralife super skimmer. The airline hose is much thicker, and the air silencer is clear with much larger holes than the coralife skimmer. This is extremely important because my coralife super skimmer would clog in two days tops because of salt creep, and any fluctuation in the air intake on a skimmer will cause it to overflow. I've had my reef octopus running for two week and have had no salt creep issues or calcium buildup in the air intake line.
Actual performance: Took me about a week to really get the reef octopus broken in and tuned to work optimally with my system. Now that it I have fine tuned it I am getting an thick skim and am seeing all of the junk that is being removed from my tank. Finally a skimmer on my system that works as it is suppose to.

The directions that came with this were terrible. Somewhere on there i read the skimmer needs to be in 5.5 to 6 inches of water. I tried that, but without ATO that is hard to maintain. Another comentor on here said it should be in 6-10 inches of water, but i do not know where he got that info. Anyway, i finally went to Coral Vues website. This is a Coral Vue NWB-110. They have a most excellent dude on their live customer service dealy named Carlos who knows mucho. He said this is an old model and that it should be in water 7-8 inches deep.

I have been having a hard time tunning it, but that has to do with a break in period and bacteria or some such thing. Anyway, hopefully i get the hang of it, but i would give Coral Vue and Senor Carlos 5 stars.

I wish ratings went higher than five stars! This skimmer is incredible, almost as interesting to watch as the display tank itself.

I have had several skimmers in the past, and this skimmer is by far the best. I tend to skim dry so I only empty my cup once a week but wow this skimmer pulls out chucks and nasty stuff like I have never seen. This skimmer shipped with the new pump and the new wastegate valve! The valve is really nice and super easy to adjust.

The skimmer is quiet but the sound of water hitting is really loud, I turned the wastegate towards my sump wall to alleviate this problem.

TL;DR This skimmer is awesome, wastegate is a little loud turn it towards sump wall.
