More About the Author

I make things up and write them down. Which takes us from comics (like SANDMAN) to novels (like ANANSI BOYS and AMERICAN GODS) to short stories (some are collected in SMOKE AND MIRRORS) and to occasionally movies (like Dave McKean's MIRRORMASK or the NEVERWHERE TV series, or my own short film A SHORT FILM ABOUT JOHN BOLTON).

In my spare time I read and sleep and eat and try to keep the blog at www.neilgaiman.com more or less up to date.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fun, August 20, 2011
This review is from: Coraline (Paperback)
I am a HUGE Giaman fan. I dream of him calling me up and saying, "I have decided to choose a new struggling author as my next writing companion, would you like to write a novel with me?" Oh yeah! I am all over learning at the feet of a master! Fun book, not my favorite Neil book, but still a terrific book! I'll be adding it to my collection! Thanks...again, Neil!

3.0 out of 5 stars The coolness of the story behind it surpasses the plot, April 2, 2011
This review is from: Coraline (Paperback)
This whole story's coolness surpasses the book.

1. The author wrote the first comic book to ever win a literary award.
2. The movie adaptation employed groundbreaking 3D technology.
3. It took 10 years to write this 160 page large font novel.

Unlike Lion, Witch and the Wardrobe which is kids adventure/life lesson. This is kids adventure/parents horror flick. It plays on parents' worst fear, that their kids could be lured away by an amiable stranger and kidnapped. The heroine makes a very adult call regarding materialism - little life lesson to kids slipped in - that's almost too heavy for the whimsical story but does give it meaning. Other than that it doesn't moralize much and comes across as an edgy kid's book.

First impression I'm like, come on talking cat *cough cough* Alice in Wonderland. Ooooh wall gives way to secret passage nice rip from C.S. Lewis. But then it totally takes off on its own and even comes into the 21st century with some spacey logic to justify this other world. Even more so there's a graphic novel of it that looked lovely but how much do you want to spend on this story? Dying to see the movie!
