In this book, Coraline first moves into a new home. She lives with weird people. When she checked out her new home, she found a door that had a brick wall behind it. The two elder women downstairs gave Coraline a rock with a hole in it for good luck because her tea leaves said that danger would come soon. Coraline goes through the door with the brick wall behind it, and she finds her Other Mother, and her Other Father. They have buttons for eyes. They say that if Coraline lived with them than her real parents they'll love her. She disagrees, and goes back to the real world. Her parents are gone for a few days, and Coraline expects that the other mother took them. She goes back in to find them. She meets three other children, their souls trapped in the Other Mother's world. Coraline has to help them find their souls. The other mother and Coraline bet each other that Coraline can find all the souls and her parents. She bets her eternity with the other mother, and the other mother bets her good right hand. The search begins. Coraline successfully finds all the people, with the help of a black cat. She even managed to kill the Other Mother. When they get out, the Other Mother's right hand was looking for the black key that can open the door. She successfully traps it in the almost bottomless well in the backyard with the black key. She had freed the souls, and saved her parents.
I like this book. It was scary and thrilling at the same time. In the book it quotes, "I'm going back for them because they are my parents." That shows that Coraline was brave to go back to the Other Mother's world. She did that because she knew that even though she was scared, she had to go save her parents. That was brave. She is a very brave person. The black cat seemed to ask why she's going in, and Coraline told him the story that told of her father's bravery when she was young. He had stayed at the bottom of the hill when the wasps attacked them. He gave Coraline a chance to run away, and when he ran away he accidentally dropped his glasses. He went back to get them knowing that the wasps were still there.
"You'll be fine, said Coraline.¡±Everything's going to be fine." These quotes in the book show that even though she's scared, she has her heart to guide and protect her. I liked this part because it was the part that the black cat had caught the mouse to help Coraline when she was in need the most. The cat didn't like catching rats, but Coraline needed help, so he helped her. This part shows friendship and caring for each other. The black cat really liked her, but he pretended that he didn't care about her at all. He likes to torture rats, but Coraline says that it's too mean.
My favorite part in this book was when she defeated the Other Mother. She threw the cat at her. The cat got scared, and it started scratching the Other Mother. Black, goopy things started to pour out of the Other Mother. At that part, Coraline quickly grabbed the snow globe, which the parents were captured in. At this part, Coraline runs out the door, since she had convinced the Other Mother that her parents were in there, and closed the door. She quickly locked it with the key. This part was breath taking.
