Review

Javier Marias writes with elegance, with wit and with masterful suspense, and yet for all this assuranse, it is the profound ontological uncertainty at the heart of his work which makes it at once so unsettling and so true. -- Michael Kerrigan, The Times Literary Supplement

Format: Paperback
For those who are equally obsessed with time and chance and the effect one has on the environment, this is the perfect book for you. The protagonist lovingly describes the effect his actions has on those around him and even goes so far as to underline the point that even, or rather especially, his non-actions truly affect those around him. This is not a book to read while sitting on an airplane so that you don't get distracted by the screaming kid behind you; this is a book to read and savor bit by bit. Marias' long sentence structure sometimes causes a bit of a headache - I find myself wondering if the sentence will take up the whole page, but generally there is an anti-logical string holding it all together. I say anti-logical because there are no certainties in this book. It explores the realm of uncertainty and how much we all dwell in this realm. For that reason, I found it occasionally necessary to put the book down and work in the garden for a while. It's truly a moving piece of fiction and something definitely worthwhile for those who wish to read it in the original Spanish. The Spanish itself is most certainly accessible to most readers and the cultural references made are few and relatively unimportant.

Javier Marías's novel, Corazón tan blanco, is by now a classic. There is little to be added in that regard. But beware that Amazon is not selling the real Alfaguara edition from 1999 (or even a Spanish reprint of it), as listed, which would have a thicker paperback cover with flaps in a proper binding. What Amazon is selling is a poor-quality reprint made in the USA, in ironically called "perfect binding" (i.e., loose individual pages glued together), with a pulp-quality paperback cover and no flaps. Buy the cheaper pocket-sized edition instead: it's not worth paying this money for a poor-quality reprint.

Format: Paperback
"Part of "los novísimos" (the very newest) or the generation of 1968, Javier Marías, like his contemporaries, breaks free from the realist and social realist tendencies that dominated Spanish literature for most of the century. Corazón tan blanco is his seventh novel and arguably one of his best. Narrated through the voice of Juan Ranz, this post-existential suspenseful novel transports us to Havana, Madrid, Geneva, and New York as the protagonist investigates his past and questions the meaning of his very existence." This novel was chosen to be included in "The New Essential Guide to Spanish Reading" which is published by America Reads Spanish: a campaign aimed to increase the use and reading of the Spanish language through the thousands of libraries, schools and book stores in the US.
