Book Description

June 16, 1998 3764359307 978-3764359300 7th

4.0 out of 5 stars 127 projects, 525 B&W illustrations, like by Gustavo Gili in English, January 19, 2012
This review is from: Le Corbusier (Studio Paperback) (French and German Edition) (Paperback)
The same as ISBN: 8425214777 published in 1993 by Gustavo Gili (GG) on 256 pages in the Works and Projects series in English and Spanish side by side that followed the original publication in 1972 by Praeger also on 254 pages in English only under ISBN-10: 0500201277 and 0500181330. It is an exclusively black & white, concise and copiously illustrated paperback survey of 127 major works. A short introductory part on several pages is followed by the main review part presenting each shortly described project on excellent B&W photos, plans, sections, elevations, hard line presentation drawings, sketches, etc. The book is ended with a biography, writings, list of works, etc. on several pages. Most of 525 only B&W illustrations are technical, but all (incl. B&W photos) are of a good quality, well balanced, crisp and legible. Like all from the Studio Paperback series, published as the 7th edition in German and French side by side only under ISBN-10: 3764359307 and 3764355506 (Basel)/08176* (Boston) by Birkhäuser Verlag, and under ISBN-10: 37608* (Zürich)/18740* (London) by Artemis Verlag, it is solid among architectural monographs, but slightly larger in size than those by Gustavo Gili and by Praeger.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Essential Guide to Le Corbusier's Major Works, June 15, 2009
This is usually the first book I pull down from my Le Corbusier shelf because it acts as an index of his most important projects, both built and unrealized. It also has the best collection of black and white photographs of Le Corbusier's work of any single-volume anthology that I have seen as well as plenty of plans and renderings and sketches. The book is concise and is arranged chronologically. The table of contents is useful as an easily-scanned list of the works it contains and there is a chronological biography in the back.

One caution is that the text is in German and French only so having some knowledge of one of these languages is helpful though not absolutely necessary as the text is basic and secondary to the visual components which occupy much more space. In addition, the book is small, less than 6" x 8", but that is a plus when using it as a quick reference.

I have the 1983 edition which will have to be replaced soon as it is falling apart from heavy use. Definitely recommended for any architect, architecture student, or anyone interested in a useful and concise illustrated chronology of Le Corbusier's work.
