5.0 out of 5 stars A wonderful, funny, subversive book!, June 21, 2002
This review is from: Cordial and Corrosive (Paperback)
A wonderful book, in which Sophie Hannah really comes into her own following the marvellous, knowing comedy of her first novel. This book is incredibly clever, without detracting from the sheer fun of reading it. Hannah has taken the basic premise of many a murder-mystery whodunnit, yet the book is all about coming out on top on the shortlist for a job - a cunningly clever blend, which also gives a great insight into the stuffy backbiting of the Oxbridge academic world. Hannah has a wonderful way of writing which brings you in and out of the story with the characters, making this an enjoyable roller-coaster-ride of a read. Most highly recommended!!

This review is from: Cordial and Corrosive (Paperback)
Sophie Hannah's debut thriller delivers a brilliant thinking tome. Her chapters are often the character's CV and they are quite amusing. Intrigue and conundrums galore will keep you guessing and investing in the quirky protagonist's goal-to get her husband a ludicrous academia position. He laments about getting a bun maker's job, and anything outside of university is a bun maker's job. If you have ever been unemployed you will enjoy the tables being turned on the interviewers. Watch them squirm and get insight into their limitations while making judgements about the interviewee. Part mystery, part job hunting revenge-in today's economy you can't go wrong and purchase this tome for laughs and revenge.
