Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade K?Appealing watercolor illustrations, spare text, and lift-the-flap surprises make Corduroy's Halloween a nice laptime selection. Preschoolers will delight in following along as the endearing bear selects the perfect pumpkin; buys decorations, a costume, and treats; and has a Halloween party. There's lots to see on each page, and while the story doesn't hold a candle to Freeman's books, it makes a colorful holiday treat for the youngest patrons.?Denise Furgione, Atlantic County Library, Mays Landing, NJ

This book shamelessly uses Don Freeman's adorable bear character to illustrate a charmless trip through Halloween images. Lisa, Corduroy's endearing owner in the orignal book, is missing entirely, as is Corduroy's urban home. The original Corduroy is a favorite in our family, but we regret buying this one.

At age 2-3 years, my son has enjoyed lifting the flaps on this charming book, but a few minor issues bother me as we read it. First, the trick-or-treaters say, "Trick-or-treat for Unicef!" Nothing against Unicef, but after the first couple of times reading this aloud, it struck me as odd and I decided to leave it at "Trick-or-treat." Unfortunately my son had already memorized the Unicef part and "corrects" me as we read. Second, at Corduroy's Halloween party everyone bobs for apples. Ewwww! Does anyone do that anymore? Finally, at the store Corduroy buys "everything he needs for his costume," but later we see his costume is the classic ghost: a sheet with eye holes. What exactly did he buy for *that*? Admittedly these are nitpicky points, however, and overall the book is an enjoyable intro to Halloween.

This book is one of the best I've found to teach my 2-year old about the traditions of Halloween. The book is beautifully illustrated with autumn scenes of fallen leaves, pumpkin patches, and not-too-scary trick-or-treaters. I was able to reinforce many familiar objects (pumpkins, apples, and scarecrows) with my toddler while introducing her to new ones (Indian corn, skeletons, and witches) The lift-the-flaps were cleverly hidden on each page which contributed to her enjoyment and attentiveness. The only drawback I found was that it left my daughter longing for candy even though the book depicts Corduroy handing out both sweets and a jar of pennies to visitors.

My two-year-old daughter LOVES this book. We read it at least four times a day. I bought it to teach her the traditions of one of my favorites holidays, Halloween, and it's been an amazing hit. She's so excited for Halloween this week, and it's because of this book! The illustrations are beautiful, and my daughter loves lifting the flaps. I didn't realize this until I had children, but it's difficult to teach little ones about holidays for the first time--they've never experienced them before, so they don't know what to expect. This book was so helpful in explaining costume parties, trick-or-treating, etc. I will admit--this is not the Corduroy I grew up with. This book has nothing to do with the original Corduroy, so if you buy this book thinking you'll be sharing the Corduroy of your childhood with your kids, you'll be disappointed. However, if you buy it knowing it has nothing to do with the original Corduroy, I think you'll be very pleased because your kids will love this book! I also recommend the Corduroy Christmas and Easter books!

Our two year old grand childten, boy and girl cousins love this story! They like to find the black kitten in each picture. I like the story because it tells more about Halloween than just trick or treating. HOWEVER.. it requires adult supervision because pages tear easily.
