About the Author

Michele Bachmann announced her candidacy for president of the United States on June 26, 2011, in her hometown of Waterloo, Iowa. She was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives from Minnesota in 2006 and reelected in 2008 and 2010. Bachmann serves on the Financial Services Committee and the Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. Before entering Congress she was a federal tax litigation attorney and then a state senator for six years. An education reformer and a cofounder of a charter school, she and her husband of thirty-three years, Marcus, began a successful business from scratch, reared five children and helped raise twenty-three foster children. They live in a suburb of the Twin Cities. Visit www.MicheleBachmann.com.

"Core of Conviction" tells the story of one woman's jihad against the tyranny of tolerance. It's not always a pretty story, but then waging holy war against agents of diversity and other belief criminals is never pretty. It's just something that must be done before the Prince of Peace returns to cleanse the world with fire.

"Core of Conviction" is also a love story. It tells the tale of how Rep. Bachmann met her soulmate, Marcus, and how the consummation of that love led to one of her most important pieces of legislation: the "Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act of 2008."

Rep Bachmann may never achieve the presidency, but by simply running, she's promoting important issues. Someday, as Americans bow their heads in compulsory prayer, they will thank her for preventing the imposition of sharia law. Not-men will also thank her for freeing them from the responsibilities of managing their uteri. And many very excited men--men like Marcus, who are fully committed to the heterosexual lifestyle--will thank her every time they purchase GE 48688 60-Watt A19 Reveal Bulbs, 4-Pack.

Michelle Bachmann and her wonderful husband Marcus are two strong Americans.

Marcus has the look of a very powerful man who works out a lot. I bet he goes to a gym and I know he probably is careful not to spend too long in the locker room because people might start to talk.

I think Marcus and Michelle being together is the most natural thing in the world and for people who don't like it, I don't care. This is the United States and the Pilgrims fought for us and our freedom. Freedom to marry whomever you want regardless of your secret shameful longings is one of those freedoms.

OK, so maybe Marcus does have some tendencies. The truth is I might have some too. That doesn't mean I'm about to throw it all away to run off with that cashier at the Piggly Wiggly just because he smiles at me when I'm buying gourds and cucumbers and various scented lotions.

I never realized how liberating it is to indulge in circular logic. Jesus is Lord because the Bible says Jesus is Lord. Phew. Glad we solved that one. Guess we can now just ignore the fact that all religions teach compassion and love and forgiveness. I cannot understand how she is not President of the United States. When will we learn to stop electing this over educated, intellectuals from Kenya who aren't even born here. Have you seen what is socialist policies are doing to the stock market. The US Constitution says that Jesus was a capitalist. Geez. These libs are ruining our nation. Michele Bachman should just take over our whole government then cut all our taxes down to zero percent. Praise the Lord.

Core of Conviction: My Story reveals Michele Bachmann to be in many ways a winning individual: a devoted parent, an avid reader, true to her convictions, and a patriot. All these virtues, however, are overridden by her small-mindedness and peevish provincialism.

Bachmann is especially proud of being from Iowa, a welcome refuge to her immigrant Norwegian relatives. In Waterloo, the Rath Packing Company provided employment for many of these relatives. Bachmann expresses great pride in how hard they worked, and she is certainly entitled to that pride. She writes, "Yes, it was rough work, but it provided a living for thousands. In its heyday, Rath was a place where men could work for lifetime and support a large family" (20).

Now enter the villain in the melodrama. According to Bachmann, "In 1948 a major strike changed everything, and in the next few decades the plant began to decline." Appreciate here how tiny Bachmann's expectations are for Rath. It provided barely living-wage employment, the working conditions were deplorable, and there was pervasive racism. Though union workers made at least 1.5 times as much money as nonunion workers, Bachmann shows absolutely no sympathy for either the union or the reasons why anyone would protest against such treatment by an employer. She is entirely a "company woman."

It is similar with Bachmann's stories about going to Washington DC to see the Democratic convention of 1976. There, Bachmann is turned off by the opulence she sees, like platters of shrimp cocktail. She comes away from that experience with the great antipathy toward fatcat government and the Democratic Party.

I had the privilege of borrowing her book from the local library and for person that does not share her opinions or worldviews; it was a real page turner. For an entire week, I stopped at the chapters and picked up at the new one with the same anticipation of "what is going to happen next?"

"Core of my Conviction: My Story" is part-memoir, part-manifesto of the political evolution and rise of Michele Bachmann, starting with the immigration of her Norwegian ancestors who settled in Iowa through shortly after declaring her candidacy for President in 2011. In her book, she recalls the transformative details of her life and reconciles to the opinions and politics that she espouses now, or at least when she was vying for the republican presidential candidacy. In short, Bachmann's life plays out like a Horatio Alger meets Elizabeth George composition with God and herself working together to let her become the woman she is today. If you are an Evangelical Christian Republican, She is the kind of woman you want for president, pending you think a woman can be president.

To anyone else, her pandering to her political base and interjections are quite revealing to the point of being inadvertently amusing. Throughout the book, she contrasts the difficulties of her life with her critique of American government - the most memorable comparison was her settling for a sub par prom dress because unlike the government she could not print her own money.
