Book Description

November 21, 2011

Michele Bachmann is one of the most compelling leaders in America. But despite all the magazine covers and cable television stories, most people don’t know who she really is, where she comes from, or what she believes. So she decided to tell her own story and let the reader decide.

As you’ll learn in this fascinating memoir, Bachmann wasn’t the type of kid who started dreaming about the White House in elementary school. She grew up in Iowa and Minnesota as a typical midwestern girl, grounded by her family and her faith. She was raised to believe in the American dream: that anyone could succeed if they worked hard and took advantage of this country’s boundless opportunities.

She followed her dreams to college and law school, pursued a career as a federal tax attorney, started a successful business with her loving husband, raised five great kids and (over time) twenty-three foster children. By her early forties she was very happy as a full-time mom and homemaker and was a leading education reform advocate in Minnesota.

Then she became what she calls “an accidental politician.”

The political insiders who ran Minnesota held a one-party line—Al Franken-style liberalism. Bachmann became especially concerned about a state-mandated education curriculum that stressed political correctness over academic excellence. She started making calls, writing letters, and recruiting others to act. When her state senator (an entrenched insider) refused to listen, someone had to challenge him for his seat. No one else volunteered, so Bachmann jumped in—and won.

That was the start of an amazing journey from obscurity to the state senate, to the U.S. Congress, to an underdog campaign for president. Along the way her style has been consistent. She says what she means and she does it. She is the rare political figure who fights for her beliefs. She speaks from the heart, with common sense about limited government, the sanctity of life and marriage, the power of free enterprise, and the need to confront America’s enemies. She also talks about putting principles above partisanship, even if that means ruffling the feathers of the Republican elite.

As Bachmann puts it, the Republican coalition is traditionally a “three-legged stool”—economic conservatives, social conservatives, and national security conservatives. Like Ronald Reagan, she represents all three groups. And in addition, as the founder of the Tea Party caucus in Congress, Bachmann considers the Tea Party the dynamic fourth leg of the coalition, in support of a return to constitutional conservatism.

This book will show you why Michele Bachmann believes ordinary people can take on the establishment and win. “Armed with values and faith, supported by family and fellow citizens, together we can do much. We can secure what people are yearning for—the chance to take our country back. Just watch.”

4.0 out of 5 stars Fighting The Tyranny of Tolerance November 29, 2011
Format:Hardcover
"Core of Conviction" tells the story of one woman's jihad against the tyranny of tolerance. It's not always a pretty story, but then waging holy war against agents of diversity and other belief criminals is never pretty. It's just something that must be done before the Prince of Peace returns to cleanse the world with fire.

"Core of Conviction" is also a love story. It tells the tale of how Rep. Bachmann met her soulmate, Marcus, and how the consummation of that love led to one of her most important pieces of legislation: the "Light Bulb Freedom of Choice Act of 2008."

Rep Bachmann may never achieve the presidency, but by simply running, she's promoting important issues. Someday, as Americans bow their heads in compulsory prayer, they will thank her for preventing the imposition of sharia law. Not-men will also thank her for freeing them from the responsibilities of managing their uteri. And many very excited men--men like Marcus, who are fully committed to the heterosexual lifestyle--will thank her every time they purchase GE 48688 60-Watt A19 Reveal Bulbs, 4-Pack.

5.0 out of 5 stars I would like to 'convict' her of being fabulous September 27, 2012
Format:Hardcover
Michelle Bachmann and her wonderful husband Marcus are two strong Americans.

Marcus has the look of a very powerful man who works out a lot. I bet he goes to a gym and I know he probably is careful not to spend too long in the locker room because people might start to talk.

I think Marcus and Michelle being together is the most natural thing in the world and for people who don't like it, I don't care. This is the United States and the Pilgrims fought for us and our freedom. Freedom to marry whomever you want regardless of your secret shameful longings is one of those freedoms.

OK, so maybe Marcus does have some tendencies. The truth is I might have some too. That doesn't mean I'm about to throw it all away to run off with that cashier at the Piggly Wiggly just because he smiles at me when I'm buying gourds and cucumbers and various scented lotions.

2.0 out of 5 stars a provincial, small-minded company woman January 29, 2013
By J. Zorn
Format:Hardcover
Core of Conviction: My Story reveals Michele Bachmann to be in many ways a winning individual: a devoted parent, an avid reader, true to her convictions, and a patriot. All these virtues, however, are overridden by her small-mindedness and peevish provincialism.

Bachmann is especially proud of being from Iowa, a welcome refuge to her immigrant Norwegian relatives. In Waterloo, the Rath Packing Company provided employment for many of these relatives. Bachmann expresses great pride in how hard they worked, and she is certainly entitled to that pride. She writes, "Yes, it was rough work, but it provided a living for thousands. In its heyday, Rath was a place where men could work for lifetime and support a large family" (20).

Now enter the villain in the melodrama. According to Bachmann, "In 1948 a major strike changed everything, and in the next few decades the plant began to decline." Appreciate here how tiny Bachmann's expectations are for Rath. It provided barely living-wage employment, the working conditions were deplorable, and there was pervasive racism. Though union workers made at least 1.5 times as much money as nonunion workers, Bachmann shows absolutely no sympathy for either the union or the reasons why anyone would protest against such treatment by an employer. She is entirely a "company woman."

It is similar with Bachmann's stories about going to Washington DC to see the Democratic convention of 1976. There, Bachmann is turned off by the opulence she sees, like platters of shrimp cocktail. She comes away from that experience with the great antipathy toward fatcat government and the Democratic Party.

Suppose, though, Bachmann instead had gone to New York City, visited Wall Street, and been invited into the corporate headquarters of some great bank. The wealth she would have seen there would dwarf what she had seen in Washington, but Bachmann would not have come away similarly distressed. Businessmen, she suggests throughout the book, are entitled to every cent they can squeeze out, legally. Though a Christian moral activist, Bachmann is constitutionally unable to detect any problem with plutocratic gouging of workers, the poor, and dispossessed.

Philosophical blinders regularly prevent Bachmann from seeing what is right in front of her. In 1978 Bachmann remembers cheering when she heard about California's passing Proposition 13. This was to her "the opening salvo of a nationwide tax revolt." Those of us who live in California have seen the dire results of Proposition 13, in particular its disastrous effect on the state schools. Bachmann was in perfect position to see this, having benefited from the miniscule tuition charge at her local community college. Attending this college at eight dollars per credit union made Bachmann's career--and indeed her husband's.

Michele, tax money enabled you to go to school at such a low cost!!! Don't you see that?!? It's as if tax expenditures like these are to be expected, as if part of God's plan for a healthy state, to help worthy people like her husband and her. It's those others, those "low" people, people who don't look like Bachmann, who don't worship at a church like hers, that we should screw as a matter of "conviction."
