A good introduction to Servlets and JSP,

This review is from: Core Servlets and Javaserver Pages: Core Technologies, Vol. 1 (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
Others have provided excellent reviews so I will just comment on a few items:
1) The book does a good job at covering the basics of using servlets and JSP for a web application. 2) Conversely, the book is stuck in the basics and instead of discussing more interesting topics it references the unpublished Volume 2. Very annoying. 3) This is a book for beginners. If you have any web programming experience this may be too simple and with a very slow pace. Many more concepts could have been included without compromising the book.

Excellent book but where is the the second volume?,
This review is from: Core Servlets and Javaserver Pages: Core Technologies, Vol. 1 (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
This is a great book on learning Java Servlets and JSP development. Even though I have been a Java Servlet developer for years I still refer back to this book when I forget how to accomplish certian tasks. If you are new to Java Servlets then this book will get you up to speed pretty fast. Especially with the MVC design pattern and development with sessions, cookies, etc.
My only complaint is the advanced features of Volume II still are not available. The author states he will cover JavaServer Faces and Struts in a Volume II which never seems to make it to the publisher.

Great Read,

Not a book for beginning programmers, however if you have minimal java experience and are proficient in other languages you will be able to figure it out.
This book is an excellent read but has little reference value because it has no index. It is very informative if you are looking for something that explains the in's and out's and why's of .jsp and servlets, but if you are looking for lessons and sample code, you will have better luck looking for it online. But then again if you have experience, you can figure out the code yourself -not that difficult. P.S. There is a wealth of hints and code at java.sun.com That site coupled with this book was enough to get me on my way.

Inconsistant and Padded,

There is some very good information in this book. The section on building web apps using a Model-View-Controller aproach is excellent and answered just about all my questions about how to put the JSP system to actual use.
However, the author never identifies who his reader is, switching back and forth between novice and advanced when he sees fit. For example, he begins the book with several pages talking about why dynamic web pages are better then static, and even has an entire chapter on HTML at the back. So, this book is for novices, right? Well, no. The author only gives about a page to multi-threading issues (very common and significant in a persistant/multi-threaded application server) under the assumption that the reader already knows everything there is to know about it. I think the author just didn't know all there was to know about it. So, the end result is a massive book with very little content for the only person who can really read it, an existing programmer just looking to put another system under his/her belt. Actually, he's pushed all the really interesting/complex concepts (custom tags, STRUTS, etc) into a non-existant second volume. He could have easilly included everything in one volume, but I suppose two will bring in more money. I'm not going to buy the second volume, if it every appears. I'm going to find ONE book that includes everything.

Mediocre Book,
By Amazon Shopper (North Carolina, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Core Servlets and Javaserver Pages: Core Technologies, Vol. 1 (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
I bought this book based on reviews of others, and found it to be a disappointment. The coverage is mediocre at best, and a lot of the techniques that the author uses are outdated -- probably just carried forward from earlier editions of this book.
The thing that bothers me most of all is that throughout this book, the author keeps referring the reader to Volume 2 for coverage of the more advanced topics. Unfortunately, Volume 2 has been delayed for over a year, and may not ever be released. Had I known Volume 2 wasn't coming out soon, I would have gone with a different author for learning servlets and JSP.

It is a very good for a beginner like me to catch all the basic knowlege in this area as fast as I could, without digging into the the advanced topic at the very begining. With the help of the book, I felt very exciting to be able to setup my own tomcat server and web.xml and develop and deploy my own JSP and servelt in MVC pattern without any help from other IDE like WSAD. The only pity I have that is that the book left all the advanced topics to vol 2, but I have feeling that the vol 2 will never be published. I did send a email to the author about the release date of the vol 2 but did not get response. I could not wait for vol 2, and I have to trun to other good book to fill up the gaps in my knowlege.

Maciek Brodala,

I strongly recommend this book for anyone who would like to learn or run JSP/Servlets courses either for the beginners or intermidate students. I have been using Marty's book for almost 2 years successfully as a textbook in my courses. It is practical with a lot of useful examples. It explains how to set up your environment with different j2ee application servers to get you started coding your own servlets and jsp pages very quickly. It is well-written so you will not get overwhelmed by technical terms that are used only when necessary. It is a great read !

Excellent for Total Beginners,
By "tiko62" (NY, USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Core Servlets and Javaserver Pages: Core Technologies, Vol. 1 (2nd Edition) (Paperback)
If this is the first time you hear the words servlet and JSP, then this book is for you. Basically, with this book you can run your first servlet and JSP pages quick. However, if you've done some programming before, this book does not provide anything useful beyond that point. In a nutshell, good for total beginners, but no in-depth examples or real world applications.

If you're learning web servlet programming this is a great book. I've found it hard to put down. The examples are great and the explanations are too.

I love this book. It's exactly how I would have written a book: with lot of detailed examples. IMO theres no other way better than illustrating things with examples. It's worth every penny you spend. I am very eager to buy Volume II, once it hits the stores in this spring.
