I wonder if Mr. Cunningham is maybe a professor by profession. This video is of a scholarly quality and seriousness. I simply can not express how good it is.
This video have exceeded all my expectations. I was originally looking to learn basic, fundamental techniques of Judo, so that I can establish my (currently beginner's) Judo career on the strong fundamentals.
Guess what - I've got more then I was looking for.
Presentations are deep, thourough. Cunninghams's sections on principles and counters are invaluable to Judoka of any level.
Tape 1 has fantastic section on Seryoko Zenyo.

Well worth the price! You get exactly what is promised in the Editorial Reviews-Description section. (I know that every publisher hypes their product but this one delivers!)
The video is over 1.5hrs long and very information dense. Cunningham-sensei has a great teaching style and is able to convey the small details that make a technique work. The video quality is also excellent. I highly recommend it. Also check out vol. 2. I only wish that it was available on DVD as I'll probably wear the tape out in no time.

there has been a blessed explosion of martial art video material available since the 90's...those, who grew up in the 50's and 60's, would have given their right eye to be present when a master thousands of miles away gave a class...now available to all..
we've seen expositions of technique before...but not this level of scholarship and nuances of technique shared on these tapes
...combined with clarity of exposition and good video quality...
if the rest of the series remains the same...I expect that this series will be the gold standard by which others are judged...
these tapes are not optional -- obligatory for yourself or dojo...buy them!

Well taught, well produced and shows exceptional detail of the subtleties of the art. I highly recommend these volumes and Mr. Cunningham is to be commended for his great teaching style. This is a tape set I refer to constantly and would recommend to any judoka.

I must say when I read the reviews I was really skeptical, and I thought that maybe the ones who bought the tapes were the same sensei's students to promote his school and gain favor. To my surprise all what they said it's just true. The ability of Mr. Cunningham is amazing. He trully knows how to explain a technique and how to make it work. Also for my surprise the video was almost 2 hours I believe, but two hours of great instruction, step by step, no boring repetitions but without being in a hurry as well. He takes his time to be sure you understand what he is trying to prove. You'll learn the traditional kata,counters to this( I wasn't even expecting this)and counters to counters. To sum it up.. this is a great well rounded video, great to improve your skills or simply add it to your curriculum if you practice other system. Keep up the good work Mr. Cunningham. I'm already looking to get the Dai Nikkyo.

This is a high quality video that is a good reference for both novice and advanced Judo students and instructors. The video very clearly demonstrates the first eight throwing techniques (deashi barai, hiza guruma, etc...) with EXCELLENT movement that illustrates the technique key points and counter points. I liked that the throws and the principles on which these throws work are easy to see from Cunningham-sensei's explanation and demonstration.

This tape clearly explains the key points for first 8 throws of the gokyo no waza as well as basic movement for judo. It demonstrates not only how to do the techniques efficiently but also why they work. I typically have difficulty focusing on video taped instruction but this tape held my interest from beginning to end. It is easy to watch and the judo is superb. I recommend this tape for judoka of all levels.

If you've ever wondered just what classical Judo is, this is the video for you. Where other videos just show you techniques, Steve Cunningham shows you the techniques and explains how and why they work, information that is essential to building a strong foundation of skills. Whether you practice Judo as a martial art or an Olympic Sport, this tape will offer you insights into Judo technique that can only improve
your ability. In a genre full of videos that look like home movies, the production values of this video are simply off the scale. Buy this tape, you won't be disappointed.

This is by far the best video I have seen. The quality and content is great. I am currently a Judo instructor at a major University and have been doing Judo for over 20 years. I have had the opportunity of working with Steven Cunningham and can not wait for the rest of the series to come out. If you can only buy on tape to help you with your Judo, this is the one.

I have purchased both the tapes done by Mr. Cunningham and I am pleased with the professional product presented. I have never seen so much attention to detail and information dense placed into a video such as these two offered. If one is interested in the throwing aspect of judo and is interested in a person with lineage going back to the beginning, these tapes are for you.
