From the Manufacturer

Get a native DWG, high-performance CAD solution—without the high price—with new CorelCAD. Open, work with and save files in DWG format for easy collaboration with colleagues, suppliers, and partners. Be productive immediately in an environment filled with industry-standard features and tools. Communicate your ideas with precision using customizable 2D and 3D design tools. Innovative features like VoiceNotes* let you add messages and instructions in your drawing, and CorelDRAW and Corel DESIGNER compatibility* enhance collaboration. Plus, CorelCAD is built for both Windows and Mac OS, so it delivers impressive speed and performance on the platform of your choice.

* Windows version only

A True CAD Solution

Native DWG file format- Unlike many CAD tools that import and export DWG files, CorelCAD uses DWG as its primary drawing format. That means you can confidently exchange files with colleagues, suppliers, and partners for worry-free collaboration. CorelCAD supports DWG, DXF and DWF up to the current AutoCAD 2010 file format version.

Industry-standard CAD features- Be productive immediately in an environment filled with familiar features and tools. CorelCAD is compatible with all major CAD programs, so experienced users will feel comfortable with the familiar command bar, command aliases, and menu and toolbar items. Dockable toolbars, right-click shortcut menus and a Properties palette are also included to help you work more efficiently.

Legacy file format support- Save drawings back to R12 DWG or DXF format, and recover damaged DWG and DXF files in all format versions.

Precision 2D Drafting Tools

Smart editing tools- Work faster with CorelCAD smart tools, such as entity snap, entity snap guides, and polar guides. Entity grips let you quickly reposition, align, copy or resize entities.

Properties palette- Manipulate entity attributes, such as layer, color, line style, and more with the Properties palette or copy properties from other entities.

Custom coordinates- Create custom coordinate systems to align the construction plane to drawing objects.

3D Modeling Tools

3D modeling tools- Add 3D solid primitives to your design and use Boolean operations to unite, intersect, and subtract bodies.

From 2D to 3D- Extrude or revolve 2D entities, sweep 2D entities along a path, or loft between 2D entities to create solid objects.

Editing solids- Slice and intersect solids, and edit edges, faces, and bodies of 3D solids.

Compatibility for a Smoother Workflow

Easy file sharing- Collaborate and share more easily with colleagues and clients with support for leading formats, including PDF, SVG, ACIS, SAT, and DWF.

CorelDRAW and Corel DESIGNER compatibility- Export to CorelDRAW X5 (CDR) and Corel DESIGNER X5 (DES)* formats to easily re-purpose your work in presentations and marketing-related deliverables.

Annotation and collaboration- Take collaboration a step further with the innovative VoiceNotes* tool, which lets you add recorded messages, reminders or instructions directly in your drawing. You can also easily mark up drawing items with freehand sketches and mask portions of a drawing to exempt them from annotations.

Automation and Custom Enhancements

Extend your productivity- Take advantage of support for LISP and Microsoft Visual Studio Tools for Applications (VSTA)* to create your own functions, routines and plug-ins in the CorelCAD automation interface.

Add-ons and enhancements- Access the plug-in store* for third-party enhancements to CorelCAD that can help you automate tasks or add new functionality to the application.

Interface customization- Create and store multiple configurations of the interface in user profiles—no programming knowledge required. Aliases for frequently used commands also help speed you through common tasks.

*Export to CorelDRAW (CDR) and Corel DESIGNER (DES) file formats, VoiceNotes, Microsoft VSTA and access to the plug-in store are only available in CorelCAD for Windows.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
This review will be from a very different perspective: that of a total newbie. Thus, unless you are new to CAD, this review is not for you. I have for some time been interested in getting a CAD program to design some of my ideas. But the price of admission was way too high. CorelCAD is not cheap, but it is in the range and appears to be a full blown product. The other reviews, you will note, are by seasoned CAD users and they are generally outstanding. I have no doubt that the product lives up to professional reviews. I have also experimented with it and found it fast, accurate, very flexible, and full featured.

My only complaint is one particular to new CAD users. The package comes with a disk and nothing else. Not even a note on how to install it. Which should be obvious, but I have had the same problems that at least one other noted in that the installation ultimately ends with a note that something was unsuccessful and to call one of their specialists. As did he, after this "unsuccessful" attempt, I checked my programs directory and there it was. I opened it, with no problems since. Of more significance is that (I surmise since the program is new) that there is no documentation online as to the functions, how to use the program, nor any help information whatsoever. It is not even listed as a program in these sections of the Corel site. That is not a fault of the program, or even of Corel, but it is a barrier to entry for those of us who might need a little guidance as to what the program does and how to do it. I don't want it to hold my hand, just give me an overview, even an index. Corel actually is usually very good about this. You will note on their site not only tips, and help, sections, but even tutorials for their other programs. I assume that these will be on the way for CorelCAD in the near future.

Thus overall, taking a guide from those already proficient, I think that this will be an excellent program, both for those who do CAD professionally, but also for those who have occasional need or like to experiment with ideas. It's price point is very favorable to the occasional user and a true gift for the professional. But it does need some documentation for those who are new to CAD.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Corel CAD
As is the case with Corel Home Office/Suite, this is not a Corel developed product. This is a rebranding of ARES CAD, hence the Ver. 11.4.209 in the help/About dialog. This is not a bad thing, since the latest version of ARES Commander Edition got a very favorable review on cadalyst dot com.

Installation
The installation of this program was a pain. First, it took almost four minutes to install Visual Studio 2.0. After VS installs the computer sits there for about a minute and a half, like nothing is happening. No "Please wait," no "working in the background" cursor, nothing. Finally the install dialog comes up. On my XP SP2 system the install progresses smoothly up until "registering product" came up at the end of the process. I then got a dialog that said, "There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." Clicking on "ok" rolls back the install.

I called Corel Tech Support who said the problem has come up before, and suggested I got a bad CD. He suggested I download the TBYB from Corel's Web site, which I did. The install went as with the CD, with the same result.

After several attempts I was about to give up and end the review here. Then I noticed the entire program was installed when the dialog came up. So without clicking on "ok" in the error dialog, I rebooted the computer. I got a normal reboot so I double-clicked on the CorelCAD icon and the program started up...and there was great rejoicing! It took the serial number and allowed me to proceed.

Moving Up
I am approaching this program a bit differently than other reviewers. First of all this is installed on an XP SP2 machine with a 2.6 ghz processor and 4 GB memory.

For me, this program is a step up. My modest 2D CAD needs for the past 15 years or so have been met by AutoSketch. The later versions have had some pretty good features for a very modest price. As an added bonus, it came with a pretty extensive library of symbols included. Though AutoSketch saves to a native format, I can save AS drawings to various AutoCAD formats...one at a time, no batch conversion possible.

The Program
After double-clicking the icon, it takes about 15 seconds for the CorelCAD splash screen to appear and another 15 seconds to get the drawing screen...far too long IMO. When you open the program it automatically creates a "My Drawings" folder in your My Documents folder. You can change all the default locations (all 18 of them!!), but the process is kludgy. Another oddity of the program: I have a Logitech Trackman with the middle button programmed for a double-click. This is disabled in CorelCAD.

During the install it offers to place a shortcut on your desktop and Quick Launch bar, but, curiously, it does not put one in the Start Menu.

The few AS drawings I have converted and opened in CC have rendered mostly ok. I like the asterisk on the Windows title bar next to the drawing name, indicating the drawing has been changed and not saved. AS also has this feature.

While AS drawings can be converted, the symbols libraries cannot. Not having the symbols libraries is a big negative to me. It seems the only way to get symbols, or blocks, is to buy specific sets from third party vendors, which can run into big bucks.

For us noobs, a tutorial would be nice, but there doesn't seem to be one anywhere. The Help file isn't really much help.

If you already know AutoCAD you should be up and running in no time. If you don't, though, it can be a steep learning curve without any kind of tutorials. For me, AutoSketch will continue to be my 2D program of choice.

Amazon Vine™ Review (What's this?)
Let me start by saying that I am not a professional drafter, although I have spent many many years working as a machinist in machine shops, plastic shops, and manufacturing, so I am well versed in CAD/CAM. I know the basics of using this software, but I leave the more complicated work to the guys in engineering and design. Because of my background, my review is tilted toward machine shop/manufacturing uses, not architecture, cosmetic, or landscape designs.

This software seems to be comparable to what I have used in the past, CadKey, MasterCad, DesignCad, etc. I would say it is comparable to many other brands 'light' or 'LT' packages, typically offered as starting points. The largest difference may be the expandability. While many professional CAD softwares are similar to this, and slightly to substantially more expensive, the major variation is that their 'light' versions are able to be upgraded and integrated into significantly more advanced packages as needed. CorelCad may be compatable with some of these, but I am not aware of any specifics.

As a 'basic' CAD user, I am able to create and modify 2D & 3D designs with CorelCAD. While it is slightly different in the interface, they are all that way, if you have experience in CAD you should be able to jump right in with the CorelCAD software. For a small machine shop, or someone who occasionally develops or designs their own products, this would be an excellent program.

My concern would be that if you plan on going beyond basic design and blueprinting, you may need more advanced software beyond what CorelCAD can provide. Going into CAM (sending the blueprint info to a CNC machine for direct manufacture or using software to develop tool cutting paths) may present where the shortcomings of this software will effect some users. Because of this, I would suggest investigating your needs beyond basic layout and model creation prior to deciding on any CAD software.

Overall, if you are simply looking for software to blueprint or 3D model your designs, this would be an excellent choice.
