NOTE: Yes there is a new version X7, but sold here on Amazon for $499.99. If you buy X6 here for $265.47 and like it, you can upgrade at Corel.com to X7 for $199.00, total $464.67. Reason to buy box set is at the end of the review

CorelDraw is a pretty intuitive vector program that has a lot to offer. Please note I have been using one version or another since it's first release. It does some things Illustrator still can't and many essential things (such as curve and line edit) much more easily. There are also a lot of things Illustrator can do that CorelDraw can't (e.g. - non permanent effects, filters, line effects and fills).

CorelDraw is also a proprietary format which can have drawbacks - good luck getting some other software to open, import or view a CorelDraw file. Also there have been occasions when a file decides to "become" corrupt (no power outages, successful save, no apparent issues, all good but..) and will no longer open AT ALL, meaning it's do over time. Corel has helped overcome this by supplying some excellent filters for importing and exporting to different formats. There is also a "Publish to PDF" option (why not under "Save As"? - too much like right?) that works pretty well though can be hinky with some effects (tranparancies, drop shadows) but these can usually be successfully worked around.

That said, Photopaint, while a very capable program, seems as confusing as Draw seems easy. Photoshop, by comparison, while it can be very complex, seemed easy breezy to grasp the essentials and get going. Capture (for me) sometimes works, sometimes doesn't. Font Manager I have never used myself, though some like it a lot.

Why buy the boxed set?

5.0 out of 5 stars I'll be switching June 8, 2014
Platform for Display:PC Disc|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
I first started using Corel Draw back when I purchased a license of Corel Draw 2. The last full version that I bought and used was Corel Draw 8, not counting the home and student license of X5 I bought (but never really used) during one of Amazon's Gold Box Deal sales. I got away from using it at that point when I got assigned to teach a digital graphics & animation class where they were using Adobe's Photoshop 5 and Illustrator 10. I eventually bought myself a license of Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium to use at home. And have since upgraded to their Creative Suite 5.5 - Design Premium. But now that Adobe has chosen to eliminate physical updates in favor for digital downloads (and maybe even going to an online application) I'm looking to go back to using Corel Draw. Nearly everything I need to do can be done with this new version of Photo-Paint and Corel Draw X7. You can even set the programs GUIs to mimic Photoshop's and Illustrator's.

The one thing that I have not liked about this new package - is that the content libraries are all on-line now. I found them to be a bit clunky to navigate and somewhat confusing as to what the three different badges were suppose to represent. I couldn't find any reference to one of the badges in any of the online documentation. Not really a big deal for me, as I hardly ever use the stock clip-art, and I still have all the stuff that came with my previous versions of the software.

The PDF manual that you can download is adequate for getting up to speed on the software - but I will be purchasing the CorelDRAW X7 The Official Guide (if and when it becomes available).

I like the new versions of the software, with maybe the exception of the Website Creator package.

Platform for Display:PC Disc|Vine Customer Review of Free Product (What's this?)
Anyone who's been following the software market knows that Adobe shot itself in the foot with its new rent-to-not-own software pricing scheme. And anyone who's evaluated this Corel suite knows that Corel has set out to eat Adobe's lunch. Not only does the software take in Adobe files, CorelDraw offers a "workspace" that emulates the look and feel of Illustrator, and Photopaint offers a similar workspace for Photoshop, as well as some recently added path-friendly capabilities. Searching for Adobe on the Corel site turns up much advice on how to handle the transition.

So, how well does the Corel suite really handle Adobe files?

* ILLUSTRATOR TO CorelDRAW *

I prepared a file in Illustrator (CS5) with two art boards, two main layers, and eight sub-layers (some were created on the fly as I added text). Into this project I placed a daring spline-defined squiggle, some gradient-filled shapes, and text in both Arial italic (which both programs offer), and Accent SF, which is only available in Adobe programs. I saved the file as an Illustrator file (.ai).

Upon first opening the file in CorelDraw, I was informed that Accent SF was unavailable, and offered the option of replacing all instances with another font (one was suggested), either this one time, or in general. All text remained editable, as did the shapes and the squiggle, including re-splining. All good. (The Corel site offers more complete information about what kinds of effects are brought forward, and what isn't).

While the content translation was good, however, the workspace translation was not. The art boards were transformed into pages, which in Corel are tabbed, not side-by-side, and the main layers were retained, but not the sublayers. Most people won't care.
