A good book for the inexperienced user,
By A Customer
This review is from: Corel PHOTO-PAINT 8: The Official Guide (Paperback)
Corel Photo-Paint 8: The Official GuideThis is a pretty good book, designed primarily for inexperienced users. It's written in an informal, easy to read style. And if you go through the book and do all the examples, you will find yourself quite comfortable with the tools in Photo-Paint. It would also be useful as a general reference text. The author says he is not an artist, but I thought his creations were artistic and they are certainly effective. There are a few unfortunate slips in the hands-on examples, things that wouldn't work because of step which had been omitted or incorrect locations for menu items, but I was always able to figure out how to correct them. Like most rather complex programs, practice is the only way to become proficient. After completing the book I came to the conclusion that Photo-Paint is a wonderful program and that the book was worth the money.

A great book to use to learn a great program!,

This book is a progressive stepped approach to using Corel Paint 8. It has "hands on" exercises that demonstrates the correct use of the different tools and allows users to see the results as you read and learn the functions of the program. I highly recommend this to anyone desiring to improve their knowledge and competency, particularly those who have little or limited knowledge of the paint programs.

Good, but don't believe the "covers Mac and Windows",
By A Customer
This review is from: Corel PHOTO-PAINT 8: The Official Guide (Paperback)
The manual as such is good, but as a Macintosh user, I expected a book that says it covers both versions to actually do so. There are no mac screen shots, and no mac specific instructions. Although most commands are easily enough converted by those familiar with the mac interface, some actions are not the same as those used by windows and take a little bit of figuring out. I'm glad I bought it, but would have prefered a little more mac information.

Although not the definitive word on Corel Photo-Paint 8 there are excellent tutorials, well written explainations and an overall enjoyable read.

Good basic manual BUT...,

I am most interested in .AVI, .MOV and animated GIF processing. As a moderately skilled Photoshop and Draw 5 user, I was pleased to see the ease of access to these formats that PhotoPaint 8 provides. Alas, I expect that I will have to wait for the WOW book to get to the "expert tips" that I crave in this area. But I would recommend the book as a good intro to the program and it will take most new to midrange users skill level up a notch.

Should have proofed it before publishing,

I'm currently working through this book, and I am finding so many mistakes in this book, it's appalling. Spelling, punctutation, incorrect menus, incorrect directions. It's becoming quite frustrating. Sure, it's written in a conversational style, but that's quite annoying sometimes. The author spends more time trying to make smart remarks about the subjects than actually explaining them.

Corel Photo-Paint 8 Official Guide,
By Barry E. Arnold (Azusa, CA United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Corel PHOTO-PAINT 8: The Official Guide (Paperback)
I bought this book several months ago, and I find it extremely informative and exciting. Iam a seasoned CorelDraw user, but this book taught me many new ideas and concepts to enhance my graphic design capabilities. The only draw back is that when I bought the book, a CD of exercises that are required through-out the book didn't come with the book I purchased. Does any one out there know where I can purchase a CD with the exercises on it that's called out through-out the book ?

I am not an experienced user of CorelDraw 8, therefore I can appreciate the information found in this Official users guide. I find it to be very informative and simple to follow. It is obvious that the author is very knowlegeable with this program and he is extremely capable of explaining the many features of this remarkable program. I am having loads of fun learning this program and one of the main reasons is this book. So much to learn.....
