4.0 out of 5 stars Surprise
The standard view in the business is that nothing beats Photoshop when it comes to image editing. I have used PhotoPaint occasionally and was impressed. But while reading this book I was in for a surprise. The author really makes good on the claim "PHOTO-PAINT beats out its main competitors and costs less than half the price." Thus, this is one of the cases...

3.0 out of 5 stars Nix about Movies! An important feature of Corel Photo Paint!

But while reading this book I was in for a surprise. The author really makes good on the claim "PHOTO-PAINT beats out its main competitors and costs less than half the price." Thus, this is one of the cases were reading the book really tells you more than you could find out easily by playing around with the software.

4.0 out of 5 stars A Great Textbook, September 22, 1999
By A Customer
This review is from: Corel PHOTO-PAINT 9: The Official Guide (Paperback)
This is the way to write a texbook! The Users Guide that comes with the program is as dry as old bones. Mr. Huss makes learning a difficult subject very easy and painless. In the past, I bought Photo-Paint5, could not learn how to use it. Someone on the internet said Photo-Paint 6 was much easier, so I bought it also. I gave up in total frustration. Mr Huss starts from the beginning and explains the techniques from scratch until the problems are solved and working. The only problem is with my memory and me. Now, I will go back to the beginning of the book, and I know that all the information is there for the taking. Only chapter that could stand an improvement is the one on creating elements for the web. All in all, this is a great book from which to learn Photo-Paint 9.

This book is very good for beginers to Corel Photo-Paint 9 . The writing style of the auther is very amusing and it cover all the thing you need to know and then some more. my only complaint is that the auther could add some pictures of the buttons he is talking about because sometimes it takes a while to understand to whice button he refers.

Recent versions of Corel Photo Paint have had valuable potential for making quick-time movies (for titles in digital movies, etc.) The Corel "factory" book has many pages about this aspect of their software. The Huss book, which seems to be just a slight rewrite, with only strictly necessary updates, of earlier versions, is TOTALLY silent on the subject of movies. How can the author ignore this "new" feature? For me, this is the MAIN reason for my using Corel Paint. So, no vote from me! I have also found the Huss book to be very weak on the subject of Color Management, an area where one really needs expert guidance, and where one would expect a book by an expert to be particularly detailed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Take That, Photoshop, June 13, 2000
This review is from: Corel PHOTO-PAINT 9: The Official Guide (Paperback)
As with any complex application, the power lies in the unique knowledge of what can be done and how. Fortunately, this book manages to recognize the line between enlightenment and obfuscation, remaining clearly on the side of helpful information.

From it's introduction to it's indepth techniques, Corel PP-9 remains both a tutorial and a reference. If you need unlimited image processing skill, this is a great place to start.

Very difficult to follow not at all user friendly. This is a very old program from the early 1990's and was a hand me down. I was able to do everything I needed to do with just surfing around the program. Recently I was looking to make a transparency, that was the primary reason I purchased the book. The book give you general terms or terms that the average person does not understand. It does not give you the step by step instructions. You have to learn all the technical terms to understand what the author is talking about. In other words you have to start at the beginning and memorize or underline ever passage that you think might be important later. I learned how to make the transparency at free location on the net. For me the book was a waste of money. I give the review rating a 1 star while the book seller a five star since they performed their job and cannot guarantee everyone is happy with the book

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Tutorial and Reference, August 20, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Corel PHOTO-PAINT 9: The Official Guide (Paperback)
When I first received this book, I was able to start with hands on training...thanks to the detailed explanations in each chapter. This was the first actual reference to using Photo Paint that I have seen, and so far it's been the only one. Huss has done a super job presenting the projects and explanations of how to use the tools in Photo Paint, shortcuts, as well as amazing masking techniques that will encourage you to want to experiment more on your own with the tools. I've learned how to improve my photo editing and also how to make a 1 dimensional object appear to be 3 dimensional from this book. I can honestly say that this was a great investment, and I highly recommend it to anyone who truly desires to improve their artistic techniques using Photo Paint.
