Paint without the mess (but that's not all),
By Joanna Daneman (Middletown, DE USA) - See all my reviews (TOP 10 REVIEWER) (VINE VOICE) (COMMUNITY FORUM 04) (HALL OF FAME REVIEWER) (REAL NAME)
This review is from: Corel Painter 6.0 (CD-ROM)
This has to be the biggest bang for the buck in software that I know of. With the additional purchase of a graphics tablet (Wacom makes one for under $100) you can reproduce the look and feel of most artist's media like oil, pastel, airbrush, crayon, watercolor and more. Paint with a brush like Sargent or Van Gogh. Clone your photos and trace them. Make them look like charcoal sketches. Change the color, the brightness, add texture like canvas, watercolor paper. Fill with woven plaids, gradations like sunsets, shining metal. Make an etching or woodcut from your sketch or scanned photo or hand drawing. The list goes on.Some of the Wacom Tablets come with Painter Classic, a cut-down version. If you do any web art, digital art or want to try your hand at it, the full version 6.0 is well worth it.

Animation artist from Chicago says:,
By Lisa A. Ruth (Chicago, IL United States) - See all my reviews

In utilizing Painter 6.0 I found it to be a most effective and creative means of enhancing animation pieces. One can transfer filmed pieces into frame by frame stacks and create new effects or even copy and paste options for the frames. In addition to animation, this program allows one to utilize any medium and apply to the computer canvas. Along with an abundance of art mediums, there are text options and an assortment of textures one can apply. This software is limitless and one of the most convenient graphics/animation programs I have used.

Corel Draw,

This product is incredible when it comes to creating graphics. However, unless you are very good with a computer the software can become quite cumbersome. It is complex but one of a kind. I, personally, don't believe there is another software that has the same capabilities. Also, the price is pretty steep so unless you can make good use of it, it's probably not worth the [cost].

A Painters Dream!,

Painter 6.0 is wonderful! As an art student I highly recommend this program. Painter has the ability to execute simple to complex illustrations. The interface has improved and is user friendly. The textures and effects are beautiful and can easly turn you into a Picasso or Monet! Get this, you won't regret it!

Still ticking in 2005--but loses some functions with XP,
By Liz "L." (PA, United States) - See all my reviews

I still love this old Metacreations (now Corel) app, and use it not only for its intended fine art and illustration purposes, but also for such pedestrian things as touching up photos. It's my "old pair of jeans" for graphic purposes. I don't even want to upgrade. The only problem is that now that I finally got a new laptop PC with XP, there are a number of functions that do not work. For example, right-clicking on the tools palette (such as scissors, layer adjuster, lasso, etc.) does not bring up their alternate functions. I'm guessing the interface is simply too changed for it to work. Although this saddens me, at least those functions are ones I don't use as often. However, it will mean fewer sophisticated projects with this app and more everyday ones, which is kind of a waste of its "talents".

Fine Artists take Note,
By A Customer

This is the best program when it comes to painting, sketching, charcol, pastelsm watercolor, impasto etc. There is a high degree of realism in the brushstrokes. All of this comes at a high price however. The software is quite difficult to learn and it requires a lot of patience. If you do pick this up, I also recommend Cher Threinen-Pendarvis' book "The Painter Wow book" to compliment your purchase. The book can show you what the software can do.

Not just for Artists,
By Stephen Harrison (Washington DC) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Corel Painter 6.0 (CD-ROM)
Oddly enough, Painter's provision of surrogate artists' materials and means of artistic execution is mostly lost on me; I have zero graphic-arts ability, but more to the point, am hoeing a different row.I am a scientist who needs to construct imaginative diagrams in support of text; the book I am currently busy with has to do with the so-called 'mind-brain' problem -a hot issue among scientists and philosophers at the present time. This calls for some tricky diagramming in what might be called 2 1/2 dimensions; that is to say, basically 2-dimensional figures which have been 'tweeked' into the third dimension using perspective distorions, semi-transparaent layering, drop-shadows, etc. Not only are its rich resources enabling me to deliver the goods. More than this, is the ease with which diagrams can be modified and evolved over time. I find this process to be one of dialogue in which diagramming helps me to progressively bring my own ideas into focus. It would be a tragedy if the Front Office decides to dump the product. I have the uneasy feeling that that's what they have in mind. |
